homemade Ice Scratchers?

Has anybody here put bolts thru the back of their skis so that kick up snow? I saw this on another site. I was wondering how good that worked. They said they used 3/8 treaded rods 3" long bolts & washers on the top and bottom so you could continuously adjust rod down as it wears. Drill the hole toward the back of ski where it starts to turn up. Just wondering if anybody has done that? Seems like it be good for those who have reverse.
 
Would probably be ok, but seems like you would have to adjust them often(after each time you run down the side of a road). Also , I would be concerned with the top side of the bolt gouging your bellypan when the ski is pushed up in the back, like going over snowbanks.
 
I've been burning thru sets of slides this year. Just looking for ideas. Doesn't seem too hard to adjust. I think I read in that thread that someone had taken carbide teeth off a circular saw blade and welding them onto the bolt end.

I put those on my MTX this year as well. The conditions have been great when I've been out so I'm not sure how well they've been working. That, and I cut the track down last year after a rain while we were on our week long trip. I need to find a better for the application rake tyne on the MTX skis, too much bending needed on the ones I bought.
 
The rake tine idea is great. I think I might go ahead and try this if I can find a few extra tines laying around.

I've trying to decide whether to try the threaded rod idea or the rake tyne. But ya know, my skis are crap anyway, so what if I drill a hole in the back of each them. I think I will try the threaded rod idea.
 
Funny thing. Everyone says it cheaper over there but no one says how much. You just post your postal code and he pm's you the price with shipping. Best kept secret?
 
i like hartmans cause they mount to the ski. if you look on his website, he has them mounted on simmons skis. well, with simmons skis, you can get the snow fin which throws snow/ice on the track as well. guess if you have both, then it will be doubly good.

In Kamloops the tines like in Adrenaline Junkeys post are $3.48 Can and it does both skiis . Any Manufactured Scratchers are $64 - $120 . I'll pay the $3.48 > Good post Junkey
