hello, hope everyones season is going as good as mine...anyways...quick question...96 vmax 600...Saturday we were doing some heavy riding thru deep lake snow, and now all of a sudden, Im hearing a lite rattling noise coming from what I think is the clutch area. It is very hard to pinpoint, but it is a small rattling noise on slow throttle, its not very loud, and only I notice it.. it does it at slow speeds now, and when I hit the brake, it seems to go away... I was thinking of changing the belt, but im not sure its the belt, as I can hold the brake down, and hit the throttle, and you can still somewhat hear that noise(not as loud) and the belt is not turning, so I figure that would rule out any belt problems...it sounds like its coming from the primary clutch area, or under the motor itself...almost as if a piece of tin can is rattling somewhere. could this be a bearing going in the clutch? I dont think its the muffler as I can hold that still, and still hear the noise, I grabbed hold of all the metel parts, thinking maybe that was vibrating, but still the noise wont go away....I dont hear it when Im driving fast, its only on slower speeds, and mostly when I hit the throttle...any ideas? could it be the belt? the belt is only a couple months old, but like I said I can still hear it if I hold the break down, and belt doesnt spin, but its not as loud if i have the break depressed...... thanks, Pete

It's more than likely your clutch cover. Mine has been doing it for over two years now, there is more play in the counter pin allowing the cover to vibrate and give off the tin can sound.

clutch cover?

how would I figure this out? where is the cover? its not shield that holds the spare belt is it? cause I took that off already....im not sure what the clutch cover is? Im sorry, but im still learning all the parts to the sled.... Is this an easy fix? Im just afraid that its something thats gonna go on me in the back woods...thanks, Pete

Yankee,
If you were doing some powder riding you were lugging the sled and thus the clutches. If the secondary got hot enough from all the shifting in the powder the plastic buttons that the helix ride on may have prematurely worn out and might be causing the noise you are now hearing. It is good to replace them about every 2k-3k miles anyway to keep your clutches tuned well.

everything looks normal.

shucks...looks like im gonna have to take it to a local repair shop..I dont know anything about ripping these apart, and will probably do more harm then good....I just hope that they can find it

I'll go out on a limb here and say it sounds like the classic brake disk shaking on the jackshaft... this noise radiates all over the place and even sounds like from the PTO side because of the common jackshaft/secondary... when you grab the brake and give it throttle, it still makes noise because you're getting two power pulses per revolution of the engine transfered to the jackshaft via the belt...

My 500 and 700 both do this.. it drives me crazy at times but mechanically isn't a problem...

hope this might be helpful... tj

brakes?

thanks...is there a way to tell if it is coming from the brakes? and If so, what would be the fix?

I've replaced the key on both sleds and it didn't help one bit...

short of a new disk, new key and new jackshaft, the only other solution is to have a machine shop cut an new key-way in the disk and jackshaft then reinstall with a new key...

I've chosen to live with it since just a couple of miles per hour and it goes away... hope this helps you determine with certainty what your problem is... tj

the noise & area your describing sounds like a broken piston skirt. the 600 twins had a bit of crank vibration & the pistons would rock & break off the skirts. pulled mine apart & it had no intake or exhaust skirts left on the pto side but it still ran fine?? weird!!

I recently picked up a '98 VMax 600 XTC Deluxe ... never started it before, until now. The previous owner told me that it had new pistons, jugs, and head, and showed me the old parts to prove it.

I took it to friend and decent sled mechanic, for pre-season prep. He cleaned the carbs and fired it up, without driving it. He immediately heard what sound like "loose change" in the primary clutch.

I wonder if it is brake disk shaking on the jack shaft?

For what it is worth, my '83 Polaris Sport 440 sounded like it had loose change in the primary clutch too, especially when letting off of the gas, but it always worked great, regardless.
