Primary clutch on SXR EXPLODED

I was out for a ride today with Nicko from TY, and we stopped at one point, we had been playing hard in the fresh snow, both our clutches were only warm to the touch, I run an 8dn. I'll bet that clutch was cracked from excess heat, from lack of maintenance. Nothing to do with a yamaha clutches or an 8dn belt.

I assume that they fit using the same crank as the yamaha clutches? Are the P-85 clutches just stronger? More material??? In the past I have heard that Polaris makes the best clutches, but didn't think anything about it. I actually have a small assortment of polaris clutching components from my pre yamaha days.

They have the same bore and taper as the Yamaha. You will use your Yamaha bolt and Polaris bushing. I had the bushing and bolt turned down to match each other. I put one from a Polaris 600 XCR on my 94 Vmax 600 and it made a big difference. Engagement RPM went up to about 3,850 and maxes at 8,000 and backs down to 7,850 rpm with no tuning to clutch at all. Hartman Inc is pretty knowlegable about using these. I have seen them used on big bore srx's and turboed 4 strokes.

so now that we have decided that the maintenance was the problem, what is the best way to "clean" and maintain the clutches?? thanks

I second this!! Some nice pics and directions would be nice! My Attak is turning 11,000 miles and SXR has 10,000. I do nothing to clutchs except blow them out with compressed air and clean sheaves with brake cleaner and lightly scuff them with scotch pad.

I'm surprized there is no instructions on this site yet. Everything else is here!!!

Maybe someone will rise to the challenge?!!! (i hope)

A picture or two might be nice, but it's very simple. Clean the sheaves with a scotchbrite or 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Then put them in the dishwasher, when the wife's not looking. Finally spray all moveable parts with some sort of drylube, pfte based spray. Wash the belt as well. Measure and inspect the belt before you put it back on. Make sure it's still good.

what year xcr? and do you still use the stock vmax belt? any other surprises changing to a p85? i've got a 95 vmax 600 that needs a primary. thanks

I would like to thank you this post. I took my son (16) out for his first trip up north. He ended up going a bit off trail and we had to drag him out. About a mile later he stopped on a lake because he thought the left ski was making some noise from the wreck ( there was no damage). I opened the hood and side cover and found blown belt and crack in outer primary sheave. I might not have looked for it but I read this post before I left. I threw on the spare and limped at 5000 rpms back to the cabin with no damage.

It was late 90's not sure of the year. I can check and see if there are any markings. I used the same 89-L belt that was on it. The only surprise was the increase in performance.

Nice to here about finding that clutch problem on your son's machine. That should work fine from the 800 Storm as long as bore and taper is the same. I am prety sure it is the same but have been wrong before. I am not sure what tuning would be involved. It may be right on performance wise. When mine was put on there was no tuning involved and motor was better balanced. My clutch engages at 3,850 instead of 3,550 and it revs to 8,000 then drops down to about 7,850. My 94 motor has 96 XT pipe carbs and secondary and clutching was set to match the 96 specs. Now i am ordering new reeds to see the real boost in performance. Stock reeds have over 5,000 miles on them so I am about due.
