OK - I have a 98 SRX700. Heads are cut .010 with doubled up base gaskets. 22/37 gearing. V-Force 3 reeds. Power valves cleaned and adjusted. The problem I am having is a sort of stumble (hesitation) when accelerating. The clutch cylinder seems to be the issue from looking at the plugs. I first suspected a plugged pilot. Carbs have been cleaned very well. New plugs .The problem is still there. I am running 148.8 mains in all 3 , 42.5 pilots,1.25 out on air screw. Choke plungers are clean. See the pictures of my plugs.
Questions: I know the 98 ran a different main in the PTO side. Could this be the issue? Should I go back to stock? I did not make the change the last owner did. Also I noticed a great deal of black residue around the top of the plug where the boot connects. Is this normal? The plug wire makes a good snap fit on the plug on all 3 cylinders. Could I have a broken reed valve on the clutch cylinder? I appreciate the help. Thanks
P.S the plugs are in line PTO on the left

1]-replace all 3 plugs...do test run
2]-do a compression test...shud be within 5%, all 3 cylinders.
3]-check spark plug cap on PTO cylinder, they have a resister in them that sometimes burns out, swap it with a buddies to see if there is an improvement.
4]-check the reeds[this is what I suspect] if one is damaged or hanging open...replace all the pedals

Thanks 800 I have replaced the plugs already. Same results. I will do a compression test in the am although I know it is good. It was 125psi last time I checked, The resister is the plug wire is interesting. I will check more into that. I agree with you I am starting to suspect a broken reed. Although I have heard it is rare on the V-Force?

yep sounds like a broken reed ... v force 3 are not very good

I have run VForce reeds in sleds + dirt bikes since they were first introduced[I even modified my RZ500 cylinders to accept them] and I have rarely had to replace a reed because of performance symptoms due to 'normal" wear, but I do replace the reeds occasionally on my high milers for preventative maintenance. Sometimes you do get a bad plug so always check the simple stuff first.
If everything checks out start looking at your clutching...a worn secondary[buttons or bushing] or worn primary components or belt can really fool you sometimes.
I have heard of issues with jackshaft and/or driveshaft bearings causing acceleration issues as well.
As far as the jetting...when you have issues its never a bad idea to go back to the stock baseline for trouble shooting...always keep detailed notes of what you have done and the results. You sometimes end up going backwards to move forward!

'98 and '99 srx's had fatter mains on the mag cylinder, instead of the pto cylinder like the '00-'02 srxs. i would check the plug cap and you could also try to narrow out the coil, by taking the center plug and hooking it on the pto cylinder and then put the pto plug on the center cylinder. see if the black plug, changes from the pto side to the center cylinder. check reeds too.

ok today I checked compression and all cylinders good at 145psi. I ran it with 3 new plugs today and still had the sputter. If you drive the thing like you stold it it runs like a raped ape. It just running on the trails at mid speed/rpm it seems to hesitate a bit. So I pulled reeds out and none were broken but on the PTO reed the pedals seem to be starting to come apart at the tips. Would this be enough to cause my issue? I am going to look for replacement pedals for all cylinders. Anybody know where I can get a set?
