I rewelded my steering post with the tank still on. We placed several welding mats over the tank.

The guy who is going to weld it said i need to take it off so he can get at the front part of the post to get a 'good' weld and weld a gusset in there he said he can't fit his welding tool in there without the tank removed. Should be less work that removing the motor to fully replace.
not too bad i pull my tank to drain gas every year .....remove seat .(2 bolts in the trunk) and unsnap sides and remove elastic cord from tank ,than inbolt the 2 bolts that hold tank down ...you will have to unbolt oil tank from under hood (since its bolted to gas tank) unplug sending unit to tank and remove vent line on top of tank ...and the 2 screws on side of tank that hold dash to the tank ....and slide it out the back were seat was .....olny takes 20 minuites to do .. there could be some wires that you will have to unplug also to make this easier but i think thats all ....

Unscrew cap throw in lit match. Stand back and catch tank. No tools needed.

For the extra 30mins i was going to it anyway just to feel better, the sled is in my attached garage and i was a bit uneasy on welding it there, this way he will have all the room to weld it right and no gas to worry about

Used to work with meaning it caught up to him or you got smart and left him...lol... You are right though, no vapours no boom.... Movies are so fake...lol...
Here goes if you haven't done it yet . . .
- Remove handlebar pad.
- Take throttle cable / oil cable out of flipper.
- Unplug wiring.
- Take handlebars off at post leaving brake cable attached and swing out of the way.
- Remove plastic dash / shroud.
- Remove seat unplug tail light wiring.
- Unplug tail light wiring at right front of gas tank.
- Remove air box.
- Remove oil tank bolts.
- Remove nuts at rear of gas tank.
- Remove tank.

Just a little something that I learned when I was a wee lad working in a shop that used gas to wash parts. Gas ignites with either a spark or flame or if heated above 500f or so. So a lit cigarette will not ingite gas. My boss would demonstrate this science lesson almost daily.

Should i just pull the damn motor and put a newer Viper steering post or will welding it be ok. The guys i talked to said adding the inner pipe and welding it up with some gussets it will be stronger that any "stock" post plus no pulling the motor and the BS that goes with that..........James
Do you mean steering gate, or steering post?
If you want to pull the steering post, yes just pull the engine. I have heard of guys getting them out without pulling the engine, but pulling the engine is so easy.

He used to work in a garage I used to hang-out at on Saturdays when I was younger. I think he's still around. I also have had hazmat trainings where the trainer will something similar, just for demonstration.

SO james how did you make out in the end. Did you get it fixed? I just had the exact same thing happen to me.

I haven't fixed it yet. I am going to have it welded. I just haven't made time to get the tank off.
