stupid question for fellow n.y. riders

Darn good question. I think that the above statement MIGHT be correct. You dont technically need a driver's license to operate a snowmobile. However, there is the stipluation if you are operating the machine, which is technically a "motor vehicle", on a state or county roadway or along the shoulder of, they could give you a hard time if you are not licensed. The only definate requirements that I know of are you must have the sled registered in NY State and you must have, at least, basic liability insurance and also that if you are under age 18, the operator must have a valid safety permit. Anybody else?
 
All i could find is that you need liability insurance and if your under 18 you need a safety course certificate.My buddy had his drivers license revoked until march and i see no reason why he could not still ride a snowmobile.
 
No License Is Required To Ride A Sled In Ny But As What Nysrxr Stated Is Also True. And That About Covers It Unlees You Are From Out Of State Then You May Need A Trail Permit But Dont Quote Me On That
 
No special permit for out of state riders. They must register the sled in NY state if they want to ride in NY state. Some other states will let you ride if you are registered in another state, NY is not one of them. Like it always is and will be.......depends who you get stopped by and how hard of a time they want to give you. The only special permit required for riding in NY is if you ride the Old Forge/Inlet-Town of Webb trail system. Then you must purchase the local trail permit to legally ride, which is $80/season, $45/week, or $50/season-weekdays only.
 
I called the sheriffs department today and they said that you do not need a drivers license to operate a snowmobile.They did however say if you are under the age of 18 you must take the safety course and get a permit.

I then called another police department just to double check.I asked if your regular drivers license is suspended or revoked can you still operate a snowmobile.They also said yes,you can still operate a snowmobile as long as you have valid liabilty insurance and a current registration.Also if your under 18 ,the safety thing.
 
but if he gets busted for something on the sled that could have ramifications with his license i have seen it happen.so tell your friend to use his head when out on the sled.
 
Make sure you have the permit. The fine was $60 last year. We got up to NY late on a Saturday night and couldn't get a permit. Got caught sitting on a beaver flow Sunday afternoon,$60 fine. Luckily we all had insurance or might have been worse.
