Hi all..
I'm brand new to this site. All I was told when asking about Yahama info was " Check out Totallyahama.com". Awesome site, keep up the good work.

To my problem...

I bought a 01 SXR. It started acting up after just my first ride. I would turn it off, and when it was started, it wouldn't take the gas, just kinda sputter. A friend told me to pull out the load control relay and being a long way in the country , I used it for the rest of the day without incident but also without lights, tach or anything electricial.I purchased a new relay, everything seemed fine till I drove back in the country and turned it off. Low and behold, it acted exactly the same till I pulled out the relay again. Upon futher inspection, I found a blue wire in the left panel that was rubbed through on some metal. I repaired it and everything was great..until I headed back in the country again. This time when it acted up we tried flicking a couple of the handlebar switches and discovered on high beam it ran perfectly, lights and all, but if I flicked to low beam it died. Flick to high beams and use the sled all day..so great, ordered a high/low beam switch.. It takes a week to get here so while I'm waiting I'm using the sled on high beam without incident till yesterday. Less than half a mile from the house the machine died..kaput..

Hauls it back to the shop and discovers there no spark..

My question is....I seem to see alot of people here with the same issues and same questions, but not alot of response to where too look or what to do to fix it...any ideas? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, does the lighting coil have wires coming from it that would cause this machine not to run? I tested the "three white wire" connector coming from the stator..seems like there's only readings on two of the wires..could this stop it from having no spark?

Do a search on 'wire harness' , lots of reading. The viper harness stuff applies to the Sxr as well, but seemingly to lesser degree of occurrence. After you check out the harness, have a read about 'stator' testing.

im gonna take a shot in the dark and say CDI box is bad, its on the right side of the air box under the hood.

Seems to be alot of discussion on the wiring under the engine..does engine have to be removed for this? Guess I better spend some time going through the wiring..

I have access to a CDI to try..I assumed it was the black box ahead of my left foot but someone here says it's on the airbox. Is that right?

I Bet Your Pick Up Coil Has Gone Bad . A Sled Will Fire Up On The Pick Up Coil Until The Stator And Mag Has Created An Electromagnetic Field Than That System Relays All Electrical Fields , When You Have No Spark Off The Pull Cord Its A Reallly Good Place To Look , Imo

OK, I must be blind...There is nothing bolted to the right of my airbox..especially with 3 electricial connectors.. Just ahead of my left footpeg is a group of wiring, relays and a big black box held on by two nuts..that's it for electricial. There are no wires or anything except the carbs attached to my airbox..Is it possible ones sold in Canada are different?
 
I have a 01 SXR600 with over 11,000 original km's and it is still running strong.It hasn't failed me yet.Them triples are bulletproof.And I run my 600 really hard and pinned most of the times,it just keeps on performing.I also geared my doen one tooth upper because of the 1.25 RipSaw track I installed.Got lots of torque that it will pull the ski's on take off yet.
 
I keep hearing that..these tripples are bulletproof. Unfortunately, the engine isn't my problem.
On mine, CDI definately isn't bolted to airbox. Gonna rip the harness out of it today and eliminate that first, then hopefully I can get some "donor parts" to try before this costs me a fortune. I'll let you know what I find, you know, in case it helps anyone else.

Maybe I am wrong but if you do not have a cdi box the sled would not run if I am right. It has to be there .
 
Well ,first visit to the site and I stumps you guys already...lol

According to local Yahama dealer, some models(my model year) had the CDI bolted to the inside of the left footwell, behind and below the driven clutch. The panel holding the ignition,choke and handwarmer buttons has to be removed to gain access..

I removed it today and tada..there it was. Anyhoo, got a known working one coming tomorrow.Meanwhile tonite comes the removal of the wiring harness..I'll keep posted..Oh and my CDI only has two big connectors, not three...

I looked at the parts fiche at wwwportyamaha.com and they do indeed have two locations listed. It's the first I've heard of that so I learned something new today. 2001 SXR 600 is the one I looked at and it had the conventional airbox location as well as the left footwell option. I wonder what the criteria was for the placement location???

Everything's different here Bud!!! ;)!

You gotta come visit sometime...check out the gallary section @ www.lewishillbillies.com..you'll see what kind of skidooing is in our backyard..awesome stuff..

So I pulled the harness out last nite and with the aid of a wiring schematic did some continuity testing and aside from a home spun patchup job of the four wires heading to the coils, everything looked pretty good. It's now re-installed in the sled. I now have a pile of electrical donor parts in front of me and as soon as work is over I got a CDI, stator, rectifier and a bunch of relays and stuff to try...

Wish me Luck!!!!
 
Update..

It's ALIVE!!!!

K, So someone was into the stator. I checked the three white wire harness a couple times and always seemed to be within range. Last check I got no reading on one of the wires. I got a puller and removed the flywheel. Thanks to a Yamaha fiche, I found out there was supposed to be a metal plate with two retaining screws bolted next to the stator. It's purpose was to keep the wiring harness from making contact with the flywheel while it was rotating. Low and behold, they didn't put it back there. Guess it was too much trouble for them, but it indeed caused the wheel to rub completely through the harness. I repaired the wiring but it must of burned to stator out. I relpaced it and the machine runs better than ever! Must have been chafing for a long time.Oh, I also measured the bolt holes and made a plate to put back there too..

Glad you found it , human error not a yamaha factory error , those motors are truly bullet proof. Best they ever made . IMO
