1999 crank installed in 2002

I have an 02 SRX that I recently changed out the crank on (seized a mag side rod bearing due to a leaking mag crank seal). I used a 99 crank that was in great shape and was updated as part of the factory recall campaign.

The problem is that it will not start now upon reassembly. There is no spark in any of the 3 cylinders (new plugs at reassembly time and new stator last year). The sled started and ran great the day it seized.

Any idea what might be going on here? I find it hard to believe that an electrical component has gone bad coincidently with me pulling the case and swapping cranks.

I also thought that perhaps the woodriff key location for the flywheel is in a different location on the 1999 crank as compare to the 2002, but that would only affect the engine’s ability to start/run; it would not prevent spark? Correct? (I pulled all three plugs and checked them against a ground for spark).

Please help,

Jim

Cranks are the same. You must have something unplugged. Look it over real well.

i thought the older srx has a smaller diameter stator. mr.viper had posted on this a few times. might need a flywheel from the 99 as there might be too much distance from the magnets on the flywheel. the older srx/sxr had lower wattage stators for the single headlamp bulb system.

If the cranks are the same, then I should be ok because that is all I changed, the stator and flywheel are 2002.

I will recheck all connections, but I'm worried because I have done this quite thoroughly.

Thank you for the replies.

OK, all connections are sound and the stator and pick up coil are in spec per ohm meter.

One thing that is very odd is that the kill switch (manual calls it the handlebar switch) seems to be working in opposite, ie, it has no continuity when in the run position (up) and then has continuity in the off position (down). The throttle switch is working fine (same connector).

Does anyone know if this is a fail mode for these kill switches, ie they default to not allowing the sled to run?

The manual doesn't use the terms "open" or "closed", they specify "continuity" or "no continuity". Clearly it has no continuity in the run (up) position, when the manual says that it should.

thanks anyway.

the switch is working right should be open when up(run) and closed down(kill) it grounds ciruit to kill

X2 I think your kill switch is working correctly.

OK,

After checking everything multiple times, I decided to do a search in the tech section for "pick up coil", because I have this nagging concern that I did something incorrect witht the stator and pu coil in reassembly.

What I learned is that in 2000, the case was changed to accomodate a smaller stator and flywheel, and therefore, the pick up coil ewas relocated closer to the crank (for the smaller flywheel).

I made an assumption that is now biting me in the a$$,,,,I assumed the cases were the same 1999 thru 2002. They are not. The pu coil in my sled is now sitting too far away from the flywheel to trigger the ignition.

Question is, what is the most effective way to relocate the pu coil closer and in proper timing to the flywheel?

Jim

something wrong with your analogy, if you used 99 crank, with 02 stator and flywheel, and you have 02 cases, the distance has not changed, has it. Unless you used the 99 flywheel and or stator, what has changed ??

Sorry for the confusion,,,,, I used a 1999 case and crank. I used my 2002 stator and flywheel. I now need to move the pick up coil closer to the flywheel using a custom bracket (I could also weld the case and drill/tap new mounting holes).

thanks to everyone who has replied on this,

Jim
