Trying to remove gas tank. On 1 side I was able to remove the screw that
holds the vented side panel on. The other side the screw just keeps turning.
How can I remove this screw without tearing up the gas tank.

good luck i had the same problem ...the little brass incert the screw threds into is just spinning cause the plastic is not tight enough around it ...i had to pull the screw and incert out with a pair of vice grips ...luckily it was on a tank i was in the process of changing out dur to a crack ....you might be able to pull it about half way out and hope that it gets stuck enough to unthread the screw .....

You can't

You'll never get it out. Only way to remove the tank now is to take the shroud off with it.

I have used an automotive door panel removal tool with great success. There are a couple of techniques that can also be used in tandem.
  1. Pry the shroud away from the tank with the tool while turning the screw.
  2. Use the tool to catch the brass nut to hold it from spinning and then turn the screw.
If you take your time you can feel it out of there. I like to use a good #3 Phillips in cordless screw gun (Makita impact in my case). The trick is to get the brass nut to stop spinning while you unscrew it. PB Blaster, Jigaloo, Deep Creep, or even WD-40 can help.

Sometimes tightening the screw with the pry tool in place can break it loose.
