Fuel for 1998 SRX mountain

I am going this weekend to buy a 1998 srx mountain but was told that you need to run only premium fuel in it. Is this true? Where I ride there are only small downs and none of them have premium fuel only regular. How will this effect the sled? Will it cause any damage? What are the alternatives to premium? Would I use octane boasters or have to get it re-jetted the carbs? Does anyone one here run regular fuel in there srx's? If someone could let me know what to expect or what I can do to compensate for regular fuel in this sled it would be much appreciated.

I've run into the same problem in my hometown, can't get premium around there, melted the top of two pistons one year and i'm sure it was because of that. I held her wide open for about a half mile that time. Since then whenI've had to use regular, Ive just watched not to wind it out for prelonged times and haven't had a problem. I don't think you need to worry about rejetting...regular fuel will cause predetonation, not lean out your jetting. I would say any two stroke sled should be run on premium, not just an srx, the extra octane always helps , especially now adays when all gas seems to be getting crappier. Octane boost wouldn't hurt either. Hope this helps
 
Ya I have 2 other two strokes and I always used regular fuel in them. I didn't think I would have to re-jet but you never know it could help but ya it would lean out the fuel your right about that. I have a friend who has a 02 sx viper and has ran regular in it since new. What year is your srx and how has it been to you? Thanks for the input. I might just have to put octane boast in every tank and just fuel up with premium when i get a chance to. Anyone else have this problem or have an idea on the effects of running regular fuel will have.
 
I owned a mountain srx. I burned it down once with questionable premium. You gotta 100% run good quality premium in a srx all the time or don,t buy it.
 
We burnt a Viper down once from questionable premium. We have ran super in them but they are jetted fat for that. The premium was when we went up in altitude.
 
Running bigger main jets won,t save you from detonation from running too low of octane.. They are 2 totally different scenarios & not related.

It will help with detonation but I wouldn't go as far as to say you'd be okay. Directionally it'll help, but whether you'll be okay depends on how close you are to detonation now.

If you're up against having to run low octane fuel with an SRX, you'd better think about not staying at WOT for too long. Short blasts at WOT (under 600 ft.) shouldn't cause a problem but you should also be concerned with midrange. And even though a lean burn down and detonation are not related, running fatter will keep things a bit cooler which could postpone Mr. Sqeeky's arrival.
 
The engine just had a top end rebuild and crabs and power valves were just cleaned. The sled has 3700 km on it and the owner seems to have taken good care of it from what I can tell and has bills for all the repairs.
 
My srx is a '99, I bought it new and basically the only problem I've had was when I melted the pistons. Its a shorttrack and probably the best things I've done for it was put a 1 1/2" track on it and put weight transfer rods on it. Most of my riding is boondocking through fields and pastures, hardly any trails. I also put an extra travel suspension in it for a yammy xtc. Your mountain srx comes with the longer travel already and the 1 1/2 track, but I would highly recommend the weight transfer rods, it made a night and day difference in picking that heavy nose up in the deep powdery stuff, as well as launching off the line.
The last couple years I've was thinking maybe I should upgrade to a newer style sled. But this year I've rode a 600 firecat, a crossfire 1000, and a 600 rev and I realized I wasn't missing much, I preferred my sled to any of those for handling across drifted fields at high speeds. So this summer I plan to extend my track to 136" (which your mountain already has) and keep the old girl. Good luck.

Well, there's your problem. You shouldn't have to clean them. Just boil them and the meat will fall right out. Don't forget the melted butter ;>)
 
Thanks everyone for you help and input. I bought the 1998 Mountian SRX on Saturday and am very happy with the sled! Got it for $2000 canadian. Did have one question however, where is the VIN number on the sled?
 
Since its used...I would check all the jetting in the carbs!!! You never know how the previous owner has jetted the sled until you check them yourself. Since your fuel could be an issue, I would recommend you run the stock jetting, mains,needles, needle clip positions,pilots, and fuel screw settings. If you do a search for Octane Boosters you will find it is very contraversial. THERE IS NO SUSTITUTE FOR GOOD FUEL - the SRXs were designed to run premium, so be cautious. There are members that do engines that could maybe rework your heads for the lower octane fuel. ie MrViper ect then you wouldn't have to worry.
