That was a good trade, lol, yes, they are very reliable sleds, alot more reliable than any polaris sled ever built, and this chassis is tough as nails to

Very reliable sled. There are a couple of potential issues that commonly occur.
1. The main wiring harness that goes under the motor over time will chafe through and cause electrical gremlins. For preventative maintenance, wrap it in split plastic wire loom.
2. If ridden hard or not set up properly, the front arm in the rear suspension will crack along the welds. Take it out and inspect for cracks and get it rewelded or reinforced.
3. Premature slider wear always comes up. depending on how the skid is set up it may wear at the front in the bend in the rails or at the rear. Do not panic and change sliders too early as they tend to wear to a point rapidly and then last a long time. To check them take a 10mm open end wrench and try and slip it over the side of the slider. If it slips over it is time to change the slides.
4. On some the water pump impeller seal will develop a leak. If you notice a small amount of coolant at the front of the motor below the exhaust manifold it is probably the water pump seal. It is a simple fix but requires disassembly.
5. The OEM Yokohama track is not a very aggressive track. If in need of a track, you can't go wrong with a 1" six pitch track for all around performance. The sx's don't have a lot of clearance for deep lug tracks but you can go with a 1.25" if not studding.
That is all that comes to mind. Clean the carbs every season and store it properly by stabilizing the fuel and fogging the motor and it will last a long time.
There is a ton of information here in the forums and in the tech pages. Use the search function and have fun.

Good stuff! I agree...also might want to check the main drive bearing at the speedo pickup. It's not that hard to change and will go bad over time...did mine last year.
bout it ^^^^^^^ oh can be modded,,... at 15 your golden now,, if set up, stock it will make u smile next year,,, ... all the way till the year after,, with just thoughts of the last year.. U may pipe at 17... do take care .. they can scare. Be safe and have fun..
Very reliable sled. IMO the Yamaha 700 triple redhead in your SXR is the best 2 stroke motor out there. I just tore mine down at 7400 miles for the first time, many on here go 10,000+ miles before they do. It's never left me on the trail yet. *knock on wood*
As others have said the front W arm is known to crack. That's about the only thing I know of. We run a 1.25" track on ours and it works fine. Also like mentioned 10mm for slider wear. Other than that ride hard and safe, and just keep dumping oil and gas in. Also don't forget maintence such as greasing and summer storage. Enjoy your sled and welcome to the Yamaha family.

im 14 and my 1997 SX 700 was my first sled, its basicly and SXR (long travel front and back now), but the only problem my dads 2000 SXR 700 had was W arm cracking he has a ripsaw 1.25 inch on it. (WARNING!!: IF YOU BUY A RIPSAW DONT BUY A RIPSAW THAT WAS TAKEN OFF OF A YAMAHA SLED i.e. of an apex, THE YAMAHA RIPSAW IS NOT NEARLY AS DURABLE AS THE ORIGINAL)
