I keep seeing references to exhaust cans. It appears they are just a slang term for exhaust pipes. Is this true?

It doesn't really refer to the pipes themselves. It is more so what goes on the end of the pipe before the exhaust exits the sleds. Some people also call them exhaust canisters.

it is the part of the exhaust that muffles the noise, single exhaust will have one can
( canister or muffler ) tripples may have one (3 into 1 ) or three ( 1 on each pipe)

And aftermarket cans don't increase hp as some may tell you, but they weigh a lot less than stock cans. People have had aftermarket cans to get a good sound but lost top speed so they switched back to the stock can. Now its not that great of a loss, but if you want to get the sound AND power, get a good set of pipes.

Slang for gutted muffler that some folks actually buy.

Or in nearly all cases... HP looser, trail closer, DNR revenue generator.

Weight savings are impressive, but at the cost of lost riding areas. Not much of a trade off IMHO.
