i bought my 02 sx viper from a guy in indiana in like feburary. i started it up and it ran great, i drove it around his yard, and onto my trailer. after i got home, i started it up for a while, and ran it a little bit, but then a problem, everytime i turned, it sounded like the clutch was grinding and i wouldn't go anywhere, then, i couldn't get the sled to move pretty much at all unless i really rev'd it up. im new to snowmobiles and really need some help figuring it out.

Just a thought but i know they had problems with the motor mounts on the 02's. It could be when your turning the engine is shifting a bit causing your clutch center to center to be off and the belt is slipping. Worth a look.
Make sure Emergency Break is not engaged... Does engine run smoothly,,- fouled plug? Sorry miss read.. yes do check for loose mounts or anything else..

Is it only happening when you turn or any time the sled has some resistance to movemeny on initial clutch engagement ie: having to start up hill, deep snow, or over a bump/mound?
Our high mileage trail mod SX's both started to slip the belt badly on engagement in deep snow ect [almost sounds like scraping]. These sleds have high engagement, big helix starting angles,lots of tip weight on the clutch weights that precipitate slippage issues when the miles rack up on the clutchs.
Things to check:[start simple]
-motor mounts
-clutch alignment + belt defection[it could be as simple as belt riding too low in the secondary clutch]
-check secondary spring setting [put it to the stock setting initially]
- try a new belt + then check belt deflection again[its amasing the problems a new belt will correct!]
-clean/service both clutches, check for bushing + weight wear
-check the primary sheaves...if there is a big groove low in the sheave faces[where the belt engages]...time for a new clutch![ouch! thats what I had to do]
-if its high on the miles, replace both the primary and secondary springs
-check for free movement of the track
-chain tension +/or bearings could also be an issue
-check the drive shaft +jackshaft bearings as well

alright, sounds like i got some work ahead of me, i checked to belts, they are fine, and checked the motor mount which is also fine. im new at this, so im thinkin im gona get a manual on the sled before i tear into her. is this a good manual to buy, just checking.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SX-V...id=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65:12|39:1|72:1171

i bet if you look in the tech section you can find a manuel, i dont know if a manuel is going to cover alot of driveability issues, How does the track turn when its elevated on a stand? is the motor runnin real good?

again, im sory but im a big newb at this, when i take the chain case off, how am i gona tell if the bearings/gears are bad???
If the sleds takes that much power to make it move like you stated them the drive shaft should be almost impossible to spin by hand as the bearing(s) will be very stiff if not pretty much seized.There's one in the chaincase and one on the other side of the axle under the secondary clutch,this one is more apt to be the bad one and can be a bit of a pain to get off.Look in the tech area as any needed step by step help can be found there.
