Best left hand throttle for Mountain Viper

I have a 2003 Mountain Viper and I want to install a left hand throttle kit for boondocking and deep snow riding. Which brand/model have people had the best success with? I'm also interested in ease of install...... And if any body has pics that would be appreciated.

So far I've looked into Goldfinger and Timbersled models. They seem relatively easy to install, just running a cable over to the throttle and clipping onto that mechanism.

What models do most Mnt. Viper owners get? Are they durable? Easy to install? Potential problems to look out for? Anything that can be shared is appreciated!

Can't recommend a brand, but do have a warning.

Watch how you position it, I've seen several different people accidentally grab a hand full of throttle when trying to switch hand positions when riding in powder and wind up piled into a tree, etc. I've seen some that have a pin that can be put in them that blocks them being able to be opened. I would personally run the pin in it all the time, and only unpin it and use it when needed and then put it back in. I've only wanted one when side-hilling across a left to right slope on hardpack so I can use the mountain strap and lean out way farther. After seeing three buddies take them back off their sleds and now they are a $100 work bench ornament, I don't think I'll ever put one on. Maybe they just positioned them in poor locations. Definitely try to keep this in mind when positioning it. (And also watch that you don't put tension on the throttle cable when installing so that the TORS acts up)
 
Thanks Mod-it, that's great advice. That would suck to accidentally grab the lefty throttle instead of the brake lever or something also. It's always good to first think of those worst case scenarios...

But I think I want to try one... Anybody have thoughts on them or pics of a lefty installed with Powermadd handguards? Can it still fit?

And if I'm correct, my 2003 Mnt. Viper was made 1 year before TORS. Mine does not have it as far as I know....

My bad about my erronous TORS assumption. Proves how much I know! But thanks everybody for setting me straight. Was I maybe thinking about DCS???? I guess i don't know much about TORS -- probably more Yamaha safety equipment. Throttle Over Ride System maybe???? Is it for a sticky throttle????? Will I have issues using a lefty????

I did just buy a Golfinger lefty for $50 from Ryan off TY here so hopefully that'll work ok. But I plan to be careful with it because Mod-It's cautions are spot on. Thank you.

My biggest worry with the Goldfinger is placement where it is convenient for use, but also safe. I also know I'll have to move some things around so it fits on there behind my handguards also.

I have run the goldfinger and the Gravity works lefties. Both work great but Gravity is out of business.
 
I got my brand new Goldfinger from Ryan B yesterday and I installed it last night. It took about 45 minutes to install (that's with my new lab puppy trying to eat my leg at the same time) and it fits perfectly. Thank you Ryan B for the superb transaction!

For fit and finish, the Goldfinger looks OEM quality. It looks like it could have came from the factory -- I'm very pleased. I did have to move the brake lever over a inch to the right on the left side, which is no big deal. Both the main throttle and the lefty work in tandem with each other very fluidly.

About Ryan B -- he shipped the throttle that day and it got here the next day. very fast. The throttle was also brand new in the box as promised. All in all an excellent transaction!

This winter I'll update this thread with a real world report from out in the snow.
 
Yes, you were thinking of dcs. It came out in '04. Your assumption about TORS is correct, throttle position override. Its purpose it to prevent the throttle cable from causing a run-away if it frays/sticks. Just make sure the throttle cable has some slack in it when at resting position or else it will cause the rpm's to only go up slightly past engage and govern out (basically).

Hopefully the lefty works out for you. The guys I know that accidentally grabbed them weren't trying to go for the brake or anything, they were just changing hand positions on the bar in tight/sticky situations and accidentally grabbed it. The problem with that is, once you grab a handful of it you can't let go of it for hanging on for dear life. Hard to make your mind let go of the handlebar when the sled is in full acceleration!
 
Hey Mod-It, our Mnt Vipers look identical. Except it appears that you accidentally drove through a firing range with yours!!!! (All the fake bullet holes). Looks good.
