alright guys, here's the deal. i have 3 sleds, 97 v max 7, 99 mmax 7, and an 03 viper mtn 7. all 3 have the same issue. after they have sat for a while, meaning days, weeks, months, they take about 20-50 pulls to start. unless you put a little gas in each cylinder as a quick prime. that seems to speed it up some.
what i am wondering is this, is there a carburator issue that these sleds develop over time? the 97 and 99 both have over 4000 miles, so i could see an issue with either sled. but the 03 viper mtn only has 900 on it. i can't imagine they took that many pulls when they were new.
is there a carb kit that i should be looking for? or does somebody out there have a solution for me. HELP PLEASE!!!
so this brings up an idea. a primer on a yamaha triple? think it would help?

Pilot circuit plugged up maybe?
Choke cable out of adjustment due to cable stretch over time?

pilot circuit? you mean the pilot jets? its a possibility, but on all 3 sleds? we are pretty good about doing maintenance on our sleds. it seems that this happens even after a carb cleaning.
choke cable, you could be on to something there. how do you adjust the choke cables on a rack setup?

BY ALOT OF CARB CLEANER. START WITH PILOTS. 3:16 (yammie tony)
after a month its normal ...after a day it seem to be cable choke problem

has anybody tried the primer idea?
After ownin 2 97 SX's and 2 05 Viper Mtns...miles listed below...my uncle having an 01 mtn max...and a cousin with a 97 SX and a 98 SRX...I do not see the need for a primer.
Like the rest said...if it's after a day or 2 check the choke cable and the pilot's...if it's months...its normal to have to pour gas in the cylinder.

maybe i worded it wrong. what i meant to say is that even with clean carbs, it still happens. i can clean the carbs, go ride the sled all day, park it for a week, and it takes forever to start.
Check for a weak fuel pump or a cracked/loose pulse line between the pump and the case. It may not be sending enough fuel during pull start. Howie

Could it be were overthinking this. Some sleds are hard to start. All 3 weird but! My vmax takes forever after sitting for just a day or so. The vipers start right up. I use the clutch trick i read about here and it improved the starting on my vmax a lot. I use it after a carb cleaning with dry carbs and they fire right up. Just turn the primary clutch back and forth about 6 times and i guess this acts as a primer and they fire right up in a pull or two. Worth a try!!!!!!!!!!
could be the one way check valve in the fuel pump draining the line back into the tank.
my enticer is wiggy like this as well. been that way though since the day i bought it.
sitting 1 week, 3-5 pulls to start.
sitting 3 weeks, 10-12 pulls to start.
sitting longer than 3 weeks or when it runs out of gas on the stand, gas in the plugs twice is the only way to get it running.
bros viper and my old sx only ever neede 5-10 pull to start if they where left for long periods. my war and dad's venture are electric start so i cannot tell you.

i am going to give this a try when i get home tonight. when my cousin dropped his sleds off, he tried pulling on the mmax probably 20 times. no such luck. i am going to try the clutch thing and see if it does the trick.
which leads me to my next question. my cousin brought these sleds from montana. they are jetted for 8000-10000 ft. i am going to do all of the servicing, carbs, clutches, etc. so, how long do i dare run the engines at low elevation (1400 ft) with the small jets in them?
i thought about trying to get it all done soon while the air temps are warm. you jet down for a rise in elevation and a rise in temp. so i figure that since its warm out i would be safer???
If all you do is idle it, you'll be fine. Generally speaking when you go up in elevation, you increase the pilots and lean everything else out. If you just running them off the trailer into the garage, you'll be fine. Just kick the choke on to give them a little extra fuel on the drive in.
hard starting machines
do you mean when they are sitting outside, or after storing in shed , what ?

both. it seems like if they sit more than a few days they are hard to start. if you try to start them after one day of riding, they fire right up, but the longer they sit the more pulls it takes.

My whole family has yamaha triples and they are all hard to start after sitting
for any extended period of time. The longer the time the harder to start. Especially if they sit with a low fuel level in the tank. Seems like the float bowls evaporate dry and then when you pull it over it takes for ever to fill them up again. It is definetly a characteristic of these machines, I've tried lots of different things like adjusting the chokes so the have max pull but still release, richening the pilots, raising the idle, but none seemed to help. The only thing that seemed to happen is the fuel economy went down.
As for the elevation jetting, you need to change it! If you run that jetting at 1000ft they will blow up for sure!

I've owned yammies more many ,many ,years and have never had issues with hard starting like you discribe. Are you sure you dont have a problem with the enricher levers on them...maybe not opening all the way?make sure the lever is clicking over twice . I'm sure you do. I can see having a problem with one...but all three ....... your missing somthin here or we are

i tried the trick of spinning the primary forward and backward about 6 times. i didn't make full revolutions in either direction. just rocked them back and forth. 5 pulls. i was amazed.
oh, and i don't want to ride them here without changing the jetting. just wondering if it was safe to start them and make sure everything works. then load on the trailer.

Glad it worked, 5 pulls is a lot better than 50!!
