I'm new to the site but not new to Yamaha's,just rusty, I had a 00 sxr700 modded. Now I picked up this sx500(economy sucks $800 can't resist) recent and understand clearly about double posting. I can't find the info and if someone could let me know where it is I would appreciate it. Mainly trail riding but need extra punch on the lake.

What I'm looking for is the clutch mod: weights, spring, cutting over drive? On my teryx the cover is cut 2mm

Secondary spring and helix set points

Muffler Mod?

Gearing?

Boost bottle?

Anything else

Thanks much in advance

Dan

The 500 twin reponds well to being left alone. Go to ty home and look at the technical pages on the left hand side of the page they may be something in there for you.

you can get thin head gaskets from hauck powersports. this will help to lessen the squish clearance and up the compression. you will notice better throttle response and snap. reed spacers are helpful as well. i believe there is a good aggressive trail setup floating around here somewhere. it would be bad for your lake running, but on the twisty trails it would be a blast. you could also get your cylinders ported.

Sounds like a great start, I can't leave it stock, I take it the head gasket doesn't have 3 layers like my 00sx700? Reed spacers too huh

Thanks again

Just got this off the tech page:

I wish my sled had more HP!

Removing the middle layer of the head gasket, and installing a set of reed spacer's gives nearly 5 HP on the 700! Maybe slightly less on the 600. (Don't do this on the 500 and we recommend running higher octane fuel in the sleds with a thin head gasket). If you want even more power, (midrange and up) send your silencer to Maxximum Performance (www.maxxperf.com) for boring. This will give you an additional 5 hp. We recommend this modification over aftermarket silencers for these reasons:

Anyone remove the middle gasket on there 500?

It would probably benefit from some jetting and clutching - but other than that they weren't meant to be a lake racer / sno crosser.

I did find this on the clutching / jetting page:

47/41 helix, 8-ab weights with a 0.8 gram rivet in tip & pivot empty. Gear down 1 tooth & drop mains 1/2 a size.

Hope that helps you out!

No sled is best left alone...I can't believe dropping mains 1/2 would make Much differance!! I could pull the foam and drop 1-1 1/2..

Snow was here and hope for a big snow winter, anyone else got some ideas?

my bro maim is gone hunting i will point him to this post when he gets back. He had a 2001 sxr500 that now belongs to my younger brother. Mods that did happen and seemed to make a difference are clutching, as it is an 01 geared it up one tooth, reed stopper notch(only made the response slightly crisper).

These mods are still on it plus it has been extended to 136" (ripsaw) and has a custom made 6 gallon seat riser/buddy tank.

run 150 mains.8Ab's Hauck blue primary,51/43 with yamaha green secondary gear down 1 gear.Take a layer out of the head gasket, carbon tech reeds and you will be hanging with some stock sxr 700's.

I think Vmaxjohn that used to be on here has the clutch set up for the 500 twins, I know its on my moms 500 deluxe ( for sale) so see if you can do a search for vmaxjohn and his clutching for the 500 twins......it may be in the tech pages..........

ok i will chime in with what i found works. 1st of all on a 01 sx500r you do not gear down if you want speed. it is already geared down 1 tooth. with stock gearing it will top out at 80mph on the gps/gun clutched or stock. been there done that. if you put in the 99 and older sx500 gears, it will then get over 90mph. i sold it to my brother before i could test it but he ran it on radar at 94mph with 1-1/4" ripsaw on it and cb's front end kit.

muffler, i had thrown a mbrp trail can on for the weight loss but it was not a really large gain so i think a bored stocker will get you what you want. especially with the crackdown on aftermarket exh.

already has a boost bottle on there stock. the reed notch from the tec pages though does improve the throttle response and it starts easyer.

i used a slightly modded vmaxjhons set-up. instead of the 8ab weights i went with thundershift 40 gram base weights loaded the same way with the 14.5mm rollers and the dalton 47/41 helix he used. stock primary spring with 2 engagement shims and stock secondary spring set to 70 degrees. made it a little corner to corner rocket.

i was told by members on here to leave that year of 500 alone as yamaha had already bumped the compression ratio up. ran great stock though and still suprises people with what a little 500 can do.

shoot me a pm if you have anymore questions as i had that sled dialed right in other than porting.
