Grass Drags

I am looking to run my 97 MM600 in our clubs grass drags in Oct. was looking for a little advice on primary and secondary clutching. Its mostly stock except that it has wiseco pistons, 500cc cylinder head, and a mbrp race can. the track is going to be short around 300 to 400 feet is what I have been told. The current clutch springs are stock what should I do to make it run for this event. Also it has 136" track with 1.5" paddles no studs. Looking for your thoughts. Thanks

I would start with the 8AB weights. They are the same profile as the 8BU-00 weghts the SRX uses for short drags. The 8AB's are a little lighter for use in the twins and they work well.

If it was a triple, I would be able to help more as far as what primary and secondary springs and helix to use.

I would put the stock can on it. The aftermarket can will bump you into the improved class. It does not really gain you anything and you would be lucky to even see a difference on your E.T.

If you need some gears and a chain let me know. What gears do you have in it now and are you running 8 or 9 tooth drivers?

I got the MM 600 out today to practice for the grass drags. I am having problems hookin up cant get the skis to come off the ground. How should I adjust my suspension up? I have a 1.5 in paddle track and I would hope that it would grab good in loose dirt on the starting line at the track. Our track is goin to be only 300 foot so it needs to hook and go. Any thoughts? I practice grassdrags today with the 600 twin MMax first I tried the 18/40 gear combo couldnt get much traction off the line but I left it in to try some clutch work first I installed a set of 8AB's with no rivets and a orange primary my engagement was at about 5500rpm's I also put in a green secondary spring with a 51/43 helix set at 80 degree problem was the motor was overrevving up to about 8300rpms and would flutter bad. So I took my sx 600 clutch that had 8AB's in it with rivets in each hole with the orange spring engagement is about 5000 rpm's runs out to 7500 to 7600 rpms and pulls good thru out the entire run top speed in 300 ft. was around 55 to 60 mph but still having problems getting traction off the line, so I put a 20/40 gear in it pulls very good off the line speed reach about 60 to 65 mph in 300 foot I am fairly happy with that but was going to try and to set my secondary at 70 degrees and see what happens. Motor is stock and running stock exhaust I have a 1.5" paddle track on it the ground is hard I am hoping at the race track the starting line will be loosened up and the track will get more of a bit. Is there any thing I can do to the suspension to get more bite? Thanks Eric

I also tried a set of 8CR with a yl/silver/yl spring but I liked the 8AB better Stock my clutch came with the 8 CR's I thought that it was running about 7800 with the stock spring.

7800 is where you want to be.

you shouldn't be concerned about your MPH at the end of the track. What will make or break you is your ET. Sure, with the 20/40 gears you might have a faster MPH when you cross the finish line but you might realize that it took you longer to get there with the taller gears.

As far as not being able to get traction and the skis coming high off the ground, tighten up the limiter straps. They are located on the W- arm and by the front rear shock of the skid. You will probably have to go atleast an inch on the threads. I would try the wrap on the secondary at 70

When you tighten up the straps, back off the adjuster nut on the front shock all the way loose then re-adjust the lock nuts after you made your limiter strap adjustments. Hand tight on the adjuster nuts always worked best for me.

Placed second in my heat race. And got third in the semi finals. Not real great but not bad for the first time. We had a good crowd of racers and hopefully will only grow from here. Can't wait until next year when I can take the PROJECT SSX 600 there. It wasn't ready for this years event it was still in pieces.
