I was checking out under the hood today and stumbled accross this. I bought the sled used this summer and havent ridden it yet. I noticed this was in the "Off" Position. It is located next to the 3rd clynder closest to the clutch. What is it and should it be on the "On" Position? Thanks for your help!

I have a red head not an SRX but I'm almost sure that is your carb heater.....It flows coolant thru the carbs when it really cold outside, (if you switch it to ON of course) there is some guys that use it and some that don't, in my case I usually never turn it on....

You are correct that is the on/off coolant valve and it is most likely off as in the warmer March/April temps it really isn't necessary to have it on.Actually the only time I use mine is in really cold temps and in lots of snow dust to prevent the carbs from icing up.
 
Alright that makes me feel better haha. So most people dont run them unless its really cold outside?
 
I have never had mine on yet. Although on the coldest days I wasn't going for a lot of face shots in the powder.

I can only turn mine by hand when the engine is cold.
 
I did try to turn it by hand but didnt accomplish anything. Will need to take some force to move
 
Even when loose you can,t turn it by hand after sled warms up due to the metal expanding. We used to make a home made tool to turn it on & off during the day as needed.
 
I only ran mine while riding in FRIGID MANITOBA!!!. I carry Schrade Multitool with a good needlenose pliers. Turns stiff hot or cold. Runs better with it off.. until your airbox sucks up a bunch of snowdust LOL! Leave it off unless it's almost to cold to ride, or your following a LOT of other sleds all day.

I figured it was due to cooling system pressure pushing on the o-ring seal as it seemed easier to turn cold then hot... easier being a relative term. I did notice a difference when relieving system pressure.

I've never noticed a change in performance either way but leave it on mostly unless I'm on the lake drag racing. I never saw a difference in EGTs.
 
my understanding as to why some people dont' run them all the time is because it heats up the fuel and makes the sled run richer. depending on the outside temp, this could have the effect of getting worse gas mileage and slower throttle response. i've never been able to tell the difference, but apparently some people can.
