97 Vmax skid swap

I want to swap out my no action skid in my Vmax for something with a little more travel and a smoother ride. I want to go with a skid from another brand, but which one I am not sure. Which skid will take the least amount of effort to swap out in the Yamahas? There are a ton of them for sale from Polaris, Arctic Cat, and Ski-doo right now but I want to make the project as easy as possible?
 
How hard was that to fit up in the yamaha, I realize I will have to move the brackets in the back but did the front ones need to be drilled out or moved? I have some viper shocks already for the front...just looking for something to help out the rear.
I live in Nunica...its close to Grand Haven or the other side Grand Rapids.

Why not just fix your "no action" and make it have some action. If you (or previous owner) have never replaced all the bushings and gone thru the shocks you will be surprised on what a difference it makes to the ride quality. It is not that much work and only a couple hundred dollars at the most.
 
Well I did go through a lot of the bushings and greased everything about mid winter last year...it did help, but not much. I also want a little more travel than what it has too. My AC has a much better rear set up than the Vmax so thats why I want to try a different skid.

How hard is the Pro-X skid to fit under the yami? Anyone have a few pics of one installed?
 
Poo and Doo are the easiest to change I have heard. The extra 10 is an easy and cheap skid to find as well.
Never did a cat but I changed mine to a doo and I can pull it out in and put it back in less than an hour.
 
From everything I have read, I am leaning toward a polaris skid...just have to find one now. I found a cat skid, but it isnt a great deal, just in good shape.

And also, what year skid should I look for? Are they all similar or are some better than others?

If its a polaris skid nothing under 96. They started making the extra-10 in 95 I believe. Don't use the extra-12 from polaris, they are not as good as the extra-10. Any of the skids out of an Edge is good as well.
For ski-doo I would do the SC3 from 2002 and up but an SCII will work if you can't find anything. I am not a cat fan and won't ever use any of their stuff so your on your own there. Search e-bay, and the polaris chat sites, dootalk.com for the doo, wreckers should have a good choice as well. Good luck finding your skid.
 
So is a skid out of a 97 Polaris XCF 440 an xtra 10? He is claiming it is, but I havent seen any pics yet. I have also read bad thing on the xtra 12 so I am staying away from that.

Also found a skid out of an 08 shift...would that be a possible swap?

Where would I be able to find the measurements for the shift skid? I would do that one if I could get those.
 
measure the donor sled if you can as that is the way the skid sits. I believe you can go here and get the extra 10 info. the shift would be the same but with slightly different measurements.

Ok, I picked up a skid out of an 02 Polaris Pro-X and want to start working on this project finally. What have people used for shim plates when doing this sort of swap (its going in the Vmax). Can I use a couple pieces of 1/2 aluminum or is that too soft? Also if I used that what are the best kind of rivets to use so I dont interfere with the track?
 
yamiluke, I used a steel plate about 3/16 thick and stainless rivets. they were a bi**h to get in cuz i used a hand powered riveter, the rivets were matched to the drill bit. good choice of skids though
 
What style rivets did you use? Like a mono bolt or olympic style? I just dont want the rivets to protrude too much beyond the plate. And thanks, I cant wait to get this skid in and see the difference.
 
Yamiluke Do you have a picture of the skid you bought? Reason I asked is I'm doing a similar swap into my 98 Mtn Srx. I bought a 151 skid from a 01 polaris and not sure what it is called m-10 or xtra 10 or? I also need the measurements and no access to the polaris.
