I have a 99 SX700 with 3,200 miles in great shape runs awesome. I am looking to but a 04 viper with 350 miles for a good price locally. My questions is how much different are these 2 sleds in handling and performance -I will keep the machines stock no pipes only clutching and jetting. Also what is the MPG on the Vipers? I do real good on the gas and oil with my SX --Wqant opinions before I make the move-Thanks!!

I am seriously thinking of doing the upgrade--newer and less miles. My 99 has been great though!!! Any problems w/the 2004 Vipers?

Do a search. It's a very well known issue. Clearance concerns. Some risk it, but most change drivers to be safe.

If you change to a 1 inch track studding the track is a non issue. You only "need" 8 tooth drivers if you stud it with the 1.25 ripsaw that came on the from the factory.

The Viper was not quite as clean as I expected. The windsheild mount was broken, dead battery so I could not check the elect start and the gauges were acting weird going on and off. The sled was really dirty and rusted trailing arms all the aluminum was oxidized and the snow flap was beat up. He wanted $3500 which was ok considering 348 mile but my 99 is way better shape so I think I will hold out and get a 4 stroke next year ??? Thanks for the info guys!!! :letitsnow

That's to bad he did not take better care of it with that few of miles on it.... The gages may not work properly with a bad battery... Otherwise its a great sled....

ditto -= bad battery would do that. I've ridden the 09 nytro xtx for a weekend and still like my 04 viper S just as much, maybe better. I sold the xtx and kept the Viper S! :)

Really? I'd figure with basically a good week of riding on it, it would be mint? I mean, my sled has 12000 kms, around 7-8000 miles maybe? And is in darn near mint shape despite the way I use it, I guess its the way its maintained. Thats to bad though, keep your eye out, there will be deals on other sleds around, just make sure you buy a yamaha!

I bought a stock 03 viper short track a few yrs ago and didn't really care for it...i had a 00 srx before and got the chance to buy it back so i sold the viper and got my old trusty srx back last yr, love it. Then about a month ago, I found a long track Viper that i couldn't pass up, so i got that now too, only it's NOT a stock sled, It has triple pipes,v-force 3's,speedwerx head, ported, etc...... Should be fun!! Anyways long story short... In my opinion vipers need some help to make good power. :letitsnow

could have many more than the 348 miles on the speedo plenty of ways for dubious people to do that, unplug the speedo cable (my buddy is good for that trick) roll it back (unless it digital?), buy a low mileage one off a wreck and swap it out when they sell, i've seen em all done unfortunately
