Anyone ever install a Mountain Performance 144" kit??

So I've recently started to strip down my stock 04 Viper and piece together the tunnel extension kit, rail extensions and also relocate the skid. I've ran into a few issues along the way and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same....

I installed the Tracks USA rail extensions, these were a piece of cake, just took some very minor adjustments with a file to achieve a perfect fit.

I've drained the cooling system and removed the seat and rear section of the tunnel along with the rear heat exchanger, here's where the issues start.

I now have the tunnel extension riveted in place and it is not designed to accomidate the rear heat exchanger, it is designed to accept the rear corssover tube which I would rather not use. Should I get the heat exchanger modifided (which would mean cutting off the aluminum connecting ends and shortening them up and getting them welded back in place) or should I just use the crossover tube? Also, Mountain Performance gave me hoses that have a smaller diameter than the system on the Viper.

My next concern is, I ordered a set of 8 tooth anti-rachet drivers, there are only two and the original driveshaft set-up has four drivers (includes two outer ones) Is it OK to use only two or should I order two outer 8 tooth drivers from Yamaha???


I would greatly appreciate any help/tips/ino that anyone has to pass along my way

by all means, run the rear heat exchanger. that kit should have came with hose covers like the mtnmax or mtn viper has. as for the hoses, if they wont fit, find some that do or find some hose reducers(wahl brothers racing). and for the drivers, you will be fine with only the 2. yamaha put four drivers on some sleds and only 2 on several others. i run a 2 driver configuration currently on 6 sleds with lots of miles and no issues. good luck with customer support from mpi, they dont have much in the 2 stroke dept.
 
You should be able to make it work. I used the big SRX cooler on mine, with a Hartman tunnel extension.

I used the srx cooler in my Tracks USA extension. Had to get a little creative with the cut off wheel, but it's been working great for years. Shouldn't be too difficult to make what you have work for you.
 
Drivers should work ok. If you have anti ratchet drivers... which you will only have 2, make sure you have the correct track with all the windows open and clipped. A little time with the SRX cooler and it will work great for you, just take your time making it fit right.

glad you asked this, i'm switching to 8tooth drivers and was wondering the same thing

Did you drill new holes for the aluminum hose ends on the cooler to come out through the tunnel extension? I was thinking about cutting down the hose ends and getting some radiator hose lenghts to attach to whats left and run it through the pre-existing holes in the tunnel, any thoughts?

I left the cooler as is and modded the tunnel extension with a Dremel. I then west to NAPA an bought some hose to connect the coolers. I had to move the hose covers a bit to cover everything, but it was pretty easy
 
I checked out the rear cooler on my 2002 Mountain Max today and as it looks, the parts and extension are designed to accomidate this cooler, it is much smaller than the rear cooler on the Viper and it also has the 3/4" connections (The Viper coolent system uses 1" hoses

I'm going to head to the boneyard tomorrow to see if I can get a rear cooler from an old Mountain Max or Venture
 
When I put my srx cooler back in my srx I just fired up the cut off wheel and took the back panel off the extension. Opened up the slots for my water bungs and riveted/bolted it in place. The hose covers hid the work I did on the sides and the back doesn't look any different than it ever did. I wanted the bigger rear cooler as I run my sled out west and here at home in MN and with the sometimes marginal trail conditions at home I figured all the cooling I could get the better off I'd be.

I have mounted the little coolers flat in the top of the extension. I seem to remember cutting the bungs off, rotating them slightly, and re-welding. That works well too. This was on a tapered extension that didn't have the lip on the back to mount a cooler vertically too.
 
When you took the back pannel off did you put it back on? What did you rivet the snow flap to without the pannel in place? I can almost picture what you did because I contemplated doing something like that myself, I just couldn't figure out how it would all work out.
 
I've thought it over and I think I am going to go with the smaller rear heat exchanger, I know it would save me a lot of money to use the existing one that I have but I really don't like the way the heat exchanger from the short track Viper will hand down about two inches from the back of the tunnel....ugly

Does anyone know where I can get either a good used rear heat exchanger from a Mountain Viper or an online store that sells them a little cheaper, I checked the local dealership and it is $280.....ouch


Also, is there a bearing/bushing rebuild kit available for the Vipers? I checked with the dealer and they said I'd have to buy the bearings one by one, that will run into too much $$$ for my liking. I thought I remember seeing someone post about this in the past but I can't find it, thanks.
