Hello everyone. I discovered this forum last year, the information has been very helpful, thank you everyone!

I am about ready to awake my "beast" (2001 SRX 700 w/o ohlins) from it's slumber, and I am sure I will be asking lots of questions :-)

My local Yamaha dealer is run by kids, and their advice has been pretty much worthless. I am glad there are those out there that understand this pro-action powervalved beast, because I am still learning.

Just a few questions for starters,

I just turned 5000 miles last season, should I be concerned with refreshing the top end? I have yet to check compression. Also, on a 2-stroke, should compression be checked when the block is warm or cold?

Can I use a 2" riser block on my handlebars without having to replace lines/cables?

Is there any hope for setting my sled up for deep powder? The only modification to the sled is a set of rear shocks from a 2004 Viper S, 4th wheel kit, and an extra set of idlers in the front to save the hyfax. I would love to go to a 136" track, I have been eyeballing kits from tracks usa. Also, is there a decent on/off trail ski for the SRX?

Welcome to the site I think you'll find it unmatched in helpful knowledge and information.
That sled you have is dynamite on snow,they rock and are wicked fast that is if yours is anything like my buds 01.As far as doing a rebuild at 5000mls your first step as you mention is to do a compression check and you do that with a warm engine and throttle wide open when you pull it over,ignition off obviously.Your compression should be in the neighborhood of 128-130 new so it will surely be lower now but don't worry too much as long as all cylinders are within 10% of each other,unless you see drastically lower compression readings that is.

You should be able to get away with a 2" riser ok

As far as setting up for deep powder I'm no use to you there other than to say that there was a mountain SRX in 98 so you may be able to take specs from that chassis or for that matter any Yamaha mountain sled in the pro action chassis and apply it to yours.Long tracking yours like you stated would be a step in the right direction as well as mabey drop brackets to lower the rear skid mount down?Hopefully someone else can give you better advice on mountain setup for the SRX.

The ski thing has been tossed around a lot and it really all boils down to personal preference but I know lots of guys run Simmons skis and really like them.They are wider than your stockers and float better in deep snow.Stock Mountain Max skis are wider too but I don't know much about them.Hope this has been of some help to you.
 
if you want to add xtra lug/length for some occasional UP powder, extensions and new track work great - if you want to ride it seriously in the mountains, buy a mountain sled. I extended my SRX to 136" with 1.5" camoplast and rode the UP for 5 years - had a ball. Then started riding out west - stretched it to 151", high comp heads, Holtzman, all the goodies. Rode the snowies once and Cooke once with it - put it on the trailer after 2 days in Cooke, rented and then bought my Summit XP the next fall. It ran great, climbed great but by the end of the day you were wiped out from manhandling the sled. Lets face it, once a trail sled, always a trail sled. In our group, we rode a 151 viper, my 151 SRX, 144 SKS poo and (2) 06 renegades with 1.75" tracks - we all ride 146 or 154 Summits now - depending on how much you want to invest, anything's better than a 121" -------- just my .02
 
Welcome to the site try a search tons of info here for all your Q's you asked.

5000 miles is getting there sure,you have blow by, do a leak down test if more then 9-10% time to ring it,performance and efficiency is slowly lost over time without one knowing it feeling it,and still run start great

like said above by FB test when warm open throttle good 5-6 pulls,good luck do a search on power valves too,knowledge there is needed.

I have a 136" kit and simmons skis on my sx-r and its awsome for midwest powder riding.The simmons are a excellent all around ski and really make the sled float in the deep stuff.My sled was disappointing in powder until these skis.The ride and traction improvement with the 136" setup is profound.
