Why is my 04 Viper S so much slower than my 02. Both have the 1.25 ripsaw and otherwise identical, clutching, gearing etc. Does the 04 have a different timing curve, is the CDI different. The 02 out pulls and is about 5mph faster at top end running side by side.

How many miles are on each of them? Sometimes, you get a fast ones, sometimes you don't I guess, I'm sure you could find someone to buy the 04 from you!

what are the weight of the 2 riders, because weight makes a HUGE difference, i can get on my 1997 SX 700 (with long travel, .92in track, other misc mods.) and smoke my dad off the line and top end on his 2000 SXR (identical mods, 1.25in ripsaw) then i get on his and i smoke him off the line and top end.
also the way it is broke in makes a huge difference, some are faster than others...

Hi Guys,
04 has 5k miles and the 02 has 12k. There was 3 of us that had 02's and they were almost identical with about 50lbs in rider difference. We would run on lakes for runs of 5, 10, 15 minutes of WOT. The only variation was the surface you were on as to whether you got ahead or went to the back. My 04S is not even close, actually rather depressing. Compression, clutching, jetting, PV setting, everything I can think of has been checked. I am thinking it has something to do with the CDI?????

now thats showing those sleds who's boss!lol
Have you checked the gearing between the two?? If you are over geared it'll be a dog out of the hole and have a hard time trying to catch up with itself.. Just my $.02 T

I got a 02 viper w/5,000 mi. and it will run down a new xp 600 ho sdi and past it on a straight away. The guy couldn't believe it. Maybe I got a fast one. Motor & clutching all stock, other than a slp can. M-10, lightweight front end parts. I've also beat rages, and will hang w/f-7. Haven't raced an f-7 since i lightened it up. I dont' know maybe that isn't saying much, but it always seemed fast. I think some are just faster than others.
Is your 04 running at 8600 rpm at full throttle?
The wide open rpm,s can tell ya a lot.

I am in the same boat. I had an 03 much faster than the 04 and now my wifes 02 kills my 04. I know they changed the head on one of the cylenders to run cooler, they added the deto sensor, and the rip saw track is heavier than the stock tracks on the older models. Other than that it is the exact same sled.

Gearing is the same, Turk I think it runs 8700/8800, I know it was below 9k(a little foggy over the summer). One other thing I just thought of is that the fuel milelage is down about 10%-15% as well. The 02 is much better on fuel. I have checked every needle, jet, screw seat, needle clip position etc on the carbs and they are all the same.

maybe some sort of parasitic loss, extra track friction, rolling resistance?

put 4.5 gram rivet in each clutch weight hole.
put new belt on.
it sounds like you're not running studs?
