1.075 studs on an 03 Viper (Advice?)

I just bought 96 Woody's Megabites 1.075 studs for my 03 Viper. When I installed them they looked HUGE. They were so large in fact that I didn't even bother to measure them, assuming Royal Distributing must have pulled the wrong studs by mistake. So I go in and have the guy at the counter check the size and to my surprise they are the correct size. I thought the 03 Viper came with the 1" Predator track - hence the 1.075 would be the correct size. I am thinking about returning them for the 1.000?

Any advice? I have never studded a track before so this is new to me. The length of the 1.075 may not have allowed them to hit the heat exchanger but I would wonder if they wouldn't get ripped out being as they were so long. Perhaps I have a track with a shallow lug height?
 
well, you for sure need to know what track is in there to start with.

if it is the stock track that came on an '03 viper then you are fine.

no yamaha's came with a 1" predator track. if it is the stock track, you should have the cone style track that varies from .75" to 1.0"
 
also, even if you did have a 1" predator on there, the 1.075 would be too short. you would need the 1.175 size to get the correct amout of penetration. the stud mfgrs recommend 1/8 to 3/16 above the track lug.
 
holy crap, after checking my reference materials, i can't believe camaplast calls that junk cone style track a "predator". i always thought the predator was at least a 1" track which is what i had on my '00 sxr7.

1.075" would be okay but as Thumper said, they won't give you the same penatration that an 1.175" would.

On the plus side you wouldn't have to worry about HX contact but 96 is not enough IMO. The more studs you have equals less stress on each stud. Of course more studs equals more weight...

I'd go with at least 144 but I also like to stud on the outside segments but there is a greater risk of pull-outs studding on the outside.
 
now i see what you mean. the '03s came with the cone style predator track with some of the lugs at .75 and some as high as 1". so comparing a 1.075 stud to a .75" cone, it would look huge.

IMO, if you are just going to take it easy on the trail and giving the track style, i would put in 120 minimum in the center, preferably 144 down the center. those studs have a smaller head too so you don't want to go less.

for a 1 in pred 9830 1.075 is perfect 1.175 is the max for trail, I ran 1.175 in mine broke and bend about 80percent so replaced them with 1.075 much better.
 
wow, i ran 144 1.175 in my 9830 and didn't bend or break any. i also put 1.175 in the stock .92 track as well. 144 both times. guess it depends what you are riding across.
 
I have an 03 Viper as well and was thinking about changing the track. I have a stock track with 96 studs down the center and there just isnt enough traction. I was thinking about going to 1.25" track and studding it. Does anyone know if it will fit? Or will I have to make some changes?
 
I just put on Mack studs 1.075 on my 99srx and they stick out at or just a hair over 3/8" over the stock .920 track. Funny thing was i wanted a 1.175 stud. Bought them at the grass drags and the guy at the mack studs booth told me they were the same as woodys gold digger 1.175 leanth. Gave me a free stud and told me to go compare. I did so and he was right. I guess you have to do some research to find out how long the studs really are to buy the right one. Also bought 1.450 with tall nuts for the xtx.
