Hmm interesting, if you are going through plugs then that means its rich so going to a bigger main would only make it worse because you would be running richer. I never go through plugs on any of our sleds. And as far as the one off main jet, they used to do that back with the redheads and what not, but all of our sleds are jetted the same all the way across.

instal said:then to top it off, carb closest to exhaust has a 142.5 main jet...while the other 2 mains are 140's...is that right? So my carbs are as follows:
carb closest to exhaust- 142.5 main, 57.5 pilot, fuel screw 3.3/8 out
middle carb- 140 main, 57.5 pilot, fuel screw 3.3/8 out
clutch side carb- 140 main, 57.5 pilot, fuel screw 3.1/8 out
and exactly, should I change it, its been running fine for 5000+ miles...I do go through alot of spark plugs though...
All your main's should be the same. unless I am wrong! any body else ?
The yamaha dealer is the only people to ever touch any of the jettings/carbs...for some reason I think they dont know what they were doing...the plugs are never burnt up or anything, when I change them, they are black and wet/oily looking. I have never seen any damage to the electrode or anything...
and final question for the night...i put it all back together just like it was for now. How do I prime the gas lines? What all do i need to do before I try to fire her up?

as far as the different mains srx's have different mains stock but usually pto is the bigger one, don't know about the vipers, for priming you can rock the primary clutch back and forth by hand to prime the pump, and/or put some premix down the sparky holes
Our SX's are supposed to be with the one bigger main too, we run them straight across the same. Our Viper's are the same on all 3 carbs. And no need to prime it. Put the carbs on, choke it, and it'll fire up. At least ours do, we never really have to prime our sleds after we clean the carbs.
Also since this is the first time you've done the carbs, do make double sure that the carb boots from the airbox are all on the carbs correctly. If they aren't on partly, like on the bottom or something crazy. Just double check it.

i pulled a couple times, nothing...took the plugs out, they were dry except a bit of oil on them. If i decide to put gas in the plug holes, how much do i put in there and do I need to mix with some oil, even though i know im getting oil in the cylinder?

Always used mixed gas when priming cylinders be careful of hydra lock, too much gas can make it seem like your engine is seized! also may damage gaskets, crank seals.

just a soda bottle cap full will fire it, may take a couple times before the carbs fill back up, full choke it
jezz...one thing leads to another that leads to another.
Got it started, running like a charm. 1/4 pull and she starts right up. Now the problem is, I was putting everything back together, cleaning things up in the engine bay, looked down and noticed my header is cracked in 2 small spots. Can I weld them up? or do I really need to buy a new one?

I bet I can guess where its cracked...where each side pipe comes into the middle one (in the Y pipe)...I also bet the bottom of it is cracked too. Both of our 05's did it too. I welded the one with a wire feed. The other was takin off for a set of pipes so we will see how my welding holds up.
yup, exact places...a friend crashed her a few years back, pushed the bumper into the exhaust pretty good. I never took the header off to inspect it, im sure thats when most of the cracking started. Got it fixed, should be down tomorrow or the next day.
I doubt that is why it happened. I did a search on here when I noticed our cracking. It's somewhat of a known problem with the Vipers. Ours only have about 3000 miles on them and never have been wrecked. Just something that happens.
