i have an 02 viper, and my kid wants to be able to pull the skis up. He says it only pull them about 3 inches. He wants to be able to go higher and longer. It is all stock with a studded track. I belive 96. what can i do to achive this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

yeah don't do that. but it will wheelie for ever without em, problem is you can't steer, took em out in my 780 machz once just to screw around in the field, boy would it carry the skis, but seriously i don't know how old your son is but do you really want him riding around WITHOUT the skis on the ground

He is 13 and can ride just about anything. So i am confident in that fact. The prob. is that last year we went riding with a friend of mine, who has a 08 rev. 800 and can ride forever with the skis up till he lets off and his is stock. So now he wants to do this. If i let me out more would that help?

yeah it would but the more you let em out the less it'll steer

buy some adjustable transfer rods. & gear it down 1[that will carry the skies

Don't forget to carry good insurance for his ski carrying sled too. You might need it when he doesn't steer it away from that tree.
I always thought giving anyone under 18 years of age no matter the maturity a sled that is as fast as a Viper is a bad idea. Huge mistake.
I wish him the best but I know my sons will not be riding Pop's Viper any time soon.

well, thanks for all the advice. i will still try all the ideas. but this weekend i bought him his own sled. an 08 polaris 600 iq pro-x race sled. i know its a polaris but i couldn't beat the deal. Plus he likes that it has a dragon button, kinda like a trans brake. I love my viper, but ill tell you, took in the back 40 and made a couple quick passes that thing hauls. it will do 0-90 in about 200 ft. but should only top out about 105. so fine with me. but thanks for the advice, i will still losen the limter straps and see if my old *** can get the skis up...lol thanks

Yea -- as Staggs said -- you want those limiter straps (loosening them is ok, but please don't remove!). My Mnt Viper had no limiter straps when I bought it (prior owner removed them and also transfer rods, the dummy....), and I had them put back on via a replaced skid that had been rebuilt and still had all it's parts.02sxviper419 said:

My sled was not safe at first until I fixed things and I just don't want anybody else to experience that........

Having a sled that is controllable is the key. My Dad's '02 700 Viper ER has a similar issue. Not that it does wheelies but that the ski pressure is not high enough and it is very difficult to turn. Add in the 192 some odd studs and it goes straight really well.
My properly setup VMax 600XTC turns on a dime but does not have overly heavy steering feel.

thought you might like to know that people who take the straps right out usually tend to break suspensions more often too, another hint about riding with them lengthened out, i used to ride like that too, you absoloutley have to set into a corner really hot, start it sliding and then throttle it, it will pick the skis and go the direction its pointed, even if in the middle of sliding. its fun for hot dogin but is almost imbossible to steer at low speeds cruising with a group. thats why you need to come in hot, when you are slowing down or even touching the brake ever so slightly it put enough ski pressure down to start turning. takes getting used to, and makes you ride hard all the time.

well i loosend up the straps today,but did not take them off. your guys advice really worked. Took it for a quick spin in the back field, definatly picked the skis up. Your right though about the turning, will take some getting used to. May put it back the way it was. Have to wait till the snow flies to actually get a feel for it. thanks for all the reply's.... Oh yeah i will keep my eyes on him with that pro-x.

Have fun with all that at 13 i was on the first year yamaha phazer and had my close calls on it. Dont know what would have happend on something like the dragon at that age.
