Hello fellow Yammi experts...

It's my first post, but I've read through some pages in this forum and have amassed some critical questions about the sled I'm looking at tonight. I would really appreciate some timely responses... (my sincerest thanks in advance!!!)

1999 V-MAX SX600 Triple - single pipe - red heads (+ 2-up seat.... yes, on a SX chassis!).

~2180 original miles (no rebuilds)

Good overall condition (however, I'll let you be the judge of that!)

~US$1400

Here are some pics

QUESTIONS:

1. Regarding the W-link (upon harsh bottom-outs): What crack's am I looking for? Where do I look?
2. I've read that the wiring harness which runs under the motor can fray - where do I look for it?
3. Am I looking for about 125psi compression? (How much should the cold vs. hot readings differ?)
4. It has a 2-up seat (with heated rear grips) - however, it's an SX chassis - can the rear suspension handle it? (my girlfriend weighs ~130lbs)
5. I understand it's rating at ~95hp (single pipe, non power valve motor) - however, is it a reliable mill?
6. Since there were crank issues in the 1998 Yammi's (and on some 1999 models) - is there any way to check besides calling a dealer and checking the VIN?

......let me know if I missed anything.

Thank you very much, in advance,

1. Regarding the W-link (upon harsh bottom-outs): What crack's am I looking for? Where do I look? Just look over the W arm well, I'm not exactly sure where they crack at.
2. I've read that the wiring harness which runs under the motor can fray - where do I look for it? I don't think this was a problem in the SX's but more so on the SRX.
3. Am I looking for about 125psi compression? (How much should the cold vs. hot readings differ?) 125psi sounds high to me but I could be wrong, just make sure they are relatively close to each other.
4. It has a 2-up seat (with heated rear grips) - however, it's an SX chassis - can the rear suspension handle it? (my girlfriend weighs ~130lbs) Set up the rear springs stiff and yes I think it can, just dont do jumping and beat on it with 2 people.
5. I understand it's rating at ~95hp (single pipe, non power valve motor) - however, is it a reliable mill? I've put 1000s upon 1000s of miles on the 700 redhead, and IMO its the most reliable 2 stroke motor ever built. So I'm assuming the 600 is the same.
6. Since there were crank issues in the 1998 Yammi's (and on some 1999 models) - is there any way to check besides calling a dealer and checking the VIN? No crank issues to worry about here. The only thing I know bout the redheads was in the 97's they used a different style bearing which had problems. They remedied that in 1998. The crank issues were more so with the SRX and not the SX/redheads.

No problem. I started out on the 97 SX with 7437 miles in my signature. Started riding it with 3014. And those Vipers had no miles on them so I've put 3087 there. So yea 6000+ miles on Yamaha. I still love going back to that 97 and hearing the scream of a stock red head. Still makes me smile to this day. In fact I just rebuilt that one, first time the motor has ever been apart. Ran great when I tore it down too. Had a crack in one piston skirt and the crank seals werent the best so it was time. You will find guys on here go 11,000+ miles on their redheads and have yet to tear them down. They say to rering about every 3000 miles to keep in top shape but to each his own. Judging by the pics of this SX it looks to be in pretty good shape. Any more questions, just ask away I'll be happy to answer.

Here's one for you,

Will the rear shock off a 2003 Venture 700 fit on the SX600?

....my brother in law has a brand new shock sitting on the self, sold the sled last year.

BTW, from what you can see, the sled I'm looking at doesn't have reverse, correct?!

There is 2 shocks in a rear skid. I have no idea off hand if it will work or not. I'm going to assume yes since the Yamaha skids didn't change until 2005 but I'll do some looking.

And from what I can see, no it does not have reverse. In the top picture to the right there would be a notch out off the hood with the handle to put it in reverse. So no it doesnt have reverse.

EDIT: From what I just read that shock will probably not work. Read about them going to a longer travel in 99, so I'm going with no clue on the shock.

I had a 99 SX600, great sled. It is the shorter travel, went to long travel with the 2000 SX-R. I long traveled the rear suspension on mine through Pioneer Performance which makes the shocks longer stroke with different limiter straps, center shock spring and spacers for the transfer rods. You might be able to do this with the Venture shock with the other changes. Huge improvement in ride which would be very noticeable with 2 people.

Went to see in person last night, I didn't buy it. Compression was a touch low 110, however even across the board. In addition, the exhaust gasket was blown - spent oil pouring down the front side of the block. Also, there was moist spotting on the base gasket - towards the front of the motor.

Also, price was non negotiable - C$2000 (~US$1900).

Thanks for your input folks..... I'll keep my eyes peeled for another Yammi triple!! :yrules:
