I have a question for all the guys who are swapping front shocks on your sleds. The clevis is just threaded on the end of the rod on a set of shocks. Has anyone thought outside the box on this instead of making mounts and retrofitting, and tried to remove the shock spring, swap the clevis out ( IF THIS WORKS MAKE SURE YOU LOCTITE IT ON) and reassemble the shock? This was not an option for me because I went to a Fox FLOAT setup but I am interested in finding out if this works because it would save a lot of hassle for others. Even if the clevis would need drilled out and tapped to accept a larger diameter shock rod it should be relatively cheap I would think. Even an amature machinest.....well maybe slightly above average !!! should be able to fab a new clevis for whatever application you need. You could even change ride height with the design of the new one. Please let me know if anyone tries this please keep the rest of us informed.

Advantage sold shock extenshions when he was open .The hardest part is the right tool to hold the shaft from turning and not damageing it.

Bruce from Pioneer Performance has them for the SRX Ohlins (had them on my old sled).

Putting a different shock on a standard viper is tough though since the mount is part of the bulkhead. So options are to try and fab a custom mount like pipdviper did, drill and tap the bulkhead for a bolt on mount or change the shock end to match the stock viper shock...

I know from experience that the clevis does not come off the Viper shocks. :o| (dont ask)

Haha is that the viper ohlins or the kyb's?

I may just sacrifice my stock viper kyb shocks for the ends
;)!

Get the old band saw out and whack the ends off !! Drill and tap and Viola !! The Viper style clevis is about as basic as it gets. A clevis from an air cylinder or 10 mins of fabrication and you have it. Basically the stock Viper mounts are just a stamped out piece of tin with some holes in it. I wish I had a KYB laying around so i could investigate this and take some measurements ! Damn overactive fab crazed brain....Why do I do this to myself ! An easy solution to the shock swap is right at my fingeretips !

O.k. that takes care of the KYB's, how about the Fox Float mounts....did you have to manufacture a new mount plate? :dunno:

yes, I had to custom fab a set of mounts for my FLOATS. Somewhere on here I had pics and a writup on how I did it.

I found this

http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=54422

I should've took pics of the brackets before I mounted them but I was so impatient I just wanted to get them mounted and see how they looked !

I can see this is still sparking some interest so maybe I'll take one side apart and do a post on how I did it and what all was involved and take more pics. The brackets weren't really that hard to make but they had to be modified 3 times. I wouldn't be able to make these at home as I don't have the tools I would need. I made them at work and unfortunately can't make any for anyone. Their funny with the whole liability and them paying me to make something to turn around to sell it. All I could do is maybe take mine off and trace a pattern out and you can have someone else make them.

Would be interested in what kind of mount was fab'd to mount fox floats on the Viper...also how to widen 4"...

As for the widening, The way I did it was a little redneck but it worked. You can see in the pics in the previous post I made a stainless set of "boxes" and mounted them where the radius arms bolt to the trailing arm. I also had to widen the sway bar and space the trailing arm out.

Uh oh, I found this post from 9801srx

the srx's are not like a sx. to put viper shocks on it you have to make custom brakets for the top of the shock. also you have to widen the front end to get a good ride height and to keep the steering from binding when the suspension is fully extended. i widened mine 1 1/4" each side , i used the tops off the srx shocks on the viper shocks and modified the the srx upper mounts to get the tops of the shocks up in to the belly pan. with this setup i have a full 9" of travel and no binding. the other method is to make a custom upper braket that accepts the viper clevis and bolts to the srx chassis.the way bethviper does it . i don't have any blueprints but i will try to post a pic to give you a idea of whats involved . also i would not atempt the method i used unless you are a capeable and or certified welder, don't want front end parts breaking at high speed or on a busy trail.

brackets

Slightly modded 97 SX upper shock brackets work for Fox Floats. Put on some protectors so any debris won't damage the lower shock body and compromise the sealing surfaces. You also need to align for ride height you set it to

the tops are welded on the viper kyb shocks. i cut the two clevis ends off ( just the two sides not the part that is welded to the shaft) ,cut a set of ohlins tops to the required height and welded them on. like i said in that other post i don't recomend this unless you are a capible and or certified welder . we don't need sleds with the frontends held together with bubble gum welds on the trails, thats not good for anybody.

Unlike 9801 , I cut the complete clevis off! :o|
I cut off the ends of my bent radius rods and welded them to the spring retainer cap that was still connected to the shock shaft. I then welded the shock shaft to the inside of the retainer cap.
Like 9801, I would deffinitely not recommend this! #$%&*

It looks like the fox shox that I have have removable ends, so I am going to try to find a set of ends similar to the upper mounts on the KYB's.

Bring them along to the show. Did you come up with a price on that track yet?

Nice set-up on the shock mounts! Very impressive to see in person.

Thanks, It was a big project actually looking back on it. Everything had to be hand hammered and hand bent since I don't have the right sheet metal tooling. I am looking for somw aluminum now to make my new radius rods and get rid of the lunchbox looking extensions. Thanks for bringing the track up as well.
