Mountain Max Seat Riser Project - Pics added 11/18

So I did a bunch of reading here on TY and thinking about how to raise the seat of my 01 MM and I finally decided on a way to go. The project isn't complete but it is started so I figured I would start a thread about it to pass along some info and see if anyone had some suggestions for me. (my steering column is currently broken which is why the bars are laying the way they are - another project for this fall) I decided on having a peice of sheet metal fabricated that raises my seat 4". I know that in terms of weight this isn't he best way to go but I am willing to gain some weight to gain some comfort. I saw a lot of guys ramping their risers and I just didn't like that idea too much. I thought it would feel like you are sliding down torwards the tank. So here is what I had fabricated.

So it is basically a "C" channel made out of 22 gauge galvanized. I cut a peice of plywood to help strenghten the top and you can see a 2x4 at one end to help reduce the side to side movement. Not sure if I am going to keep it like this or come up with another way to strengthen it. I drilled holes in the botton of the channel that line up with the stock seat bolts and dropped the riser on my tunner.

I plan on using the space below the tunnel as storage if needed. The block of 2x4 on the left of this pic is only there temporarily to hold the peice of plywood up.

So with the seat raised as it is, it creates a gap between the seat and the tank. They way I am thinking of solving this is still in the expiramental phase but here is what I am thinking. I found someone selling a tank bag and what I an planning on doing is getting some padding to fill the gap and maybe sewing or velcro-ing the seat and the tank bag together. So here is what it would look like.

This does create the issue of figuring out a way to snap everything down but I think another small peice of galvanized riviet to the tunnel from the front of the gas tank back to overlap with the riser a little bit will work. I will rivet some snaps on that peice and lock it all down.

As I said, still working on it but I am making progress. What do you guys think? Any other ideas to throw in? FYI - the seat riser was fabricated for me for $60.

Any ideas are welcome!
Bruce

Seat riser

Bruce--

Short, sweet and cheap. Looks sturdier than !@#$! and should hold up great. A bud of mine did something similar ro yours but tapered it so it sat higher in the back. He's a little short shit but really knows how to ride so the added height is a big bene for him.

As far as a riser for me, when I sit on the stock seat, my "gorilla arms" are long enough to allow me to reach the bars very comfortably. Would a riser help out boonie'ing off trail? That's about 95 percent of our riding. But we don't have the wide open spaces like you guys out west We are constantly cutting our way through the brush and trees. Most of the time I'm standing and leaning to help cut through tight spaces.

Even tho I've only got a 144 track, it's a lot when you are riding through a jungle of trees, stumps, etc. Like I said, sitting on the stock seat still allows me to turn the skis as far as they will go in each direction with no difficulty.

Thanx in advance,
Chris

I like it and the idea of the storage below. I have been trying to figure out how to raise the seat on my Exciter. I think I am going to add more foam to the top and re-do the seat.

I'm working on installing a Polaris Dragon seat and tank on mine to raise up the seating height. I'll post some pictures later.

Sorry it has taken so long but I have just about finished the project and I am pretty happy with the results.

The seat riser gets me about 4" higher. I secured the riser to the tunnel with 4 bolts and a strip of plywood on either side to help distribute the downward pressure on tunnel.

As I mentioned above, the problem was now that the seat was higher, it didn't merry up with the tank. So I purchased a tank bag here on TY and got some foam and put as much under the bag as I could. This would raise the bag up as well as add some padding. Now that the seat was higher, I had to figure out a way to connect the snaps on the front of the sled.

Took a trip to the local fabric store and grabbed some blue vinyl - a yard was about $2.50. Then figured out what size i needed and cut a piece for either side. I attached some snaps to the bottom of the peice that would snap into the stock seat snaps. I curled the top over the seat riser and installed a snap up there as well to hold down that corner. Then added a snap to the tank bag to keep the other side up.

Taking a step back, there are 2 plastic "hooks" under the front of the seat that usually tuck in under the tank. To fix this, I attached some straps off an old back pack and made a loop with the straps and secured one side of it down with the rear tank screws.

That is about it. Spend much more time thinking about it and trying different ideas. Still need to figure out a cool door to close off the space under the seat. Plan to use this space for emergency items for the most part. Probably won't be going in and out that much. If you have any ideas for a door, pass them along.

So there she is. Not bad. Hopefully it all holds together. Worse case scenario is I take it all off which will take me about 10 minutes.

Let me know your thoughts. Total cost was probably about $75 after the riser fabrication, the vinyl, snaps and foam. Oh, and it gave me something to do now that it is dark early. Need to find a new project now.

Enjoy!

Just a quick update. My seat riser works fantastic! It is like riding a completely new sled. So much more comfortable!

Send any questions you may have. Happy to help someone else out as this thing rocks!
