i have 3400 miles on mine and im just wondering how reliable/ miles these things last for??? do you re ring em if the compression is good? anyway? or what? how many miles on your sleds???

about 14,000 miles on my 01 SRX and I just re-ringed it this summer for the first time. I believe there's a thread on here on this topic with quite a few posts. You'll be pleasantly surprised by what you'll read.

Viper miles

13,740 on my 02 Viper motor never broke open yet! Viper is now 3rd sled so not as much use as years before so I'LL just leave her alone!

buddy of mine has '00 srx w/15,000 miles on it, and engine was never broke open yet. he also has a '97 sx 700 w/10,000 miles on it and it still runs strong. never rebuilt either.

i've got 6000 miles on my current 00 srx 700, i reringed when i bought it last winter, i had another 00, and an 01 before this one, i'm a re-ring every 4000 miles or so kind of guy but that's just me, plenty of guys (as you've now read) go much longer

I had 26000 km on my 02 viper. I thought I blew the motor up, but when I took it apart, it was a reed cracked off and went into the base and jammed where the connecting rod rotates. Causing the piston to tip making it seem like the motor was blown. I changed everything from top to bottom because I already had all the parts bought At 31000km I cracked the skid and frame so I scrapped it and use parts for other sleds! Bullet proof sleds! Yamaha never left me on a trail due to a blown motor, unlike my Arctic craps I had in the past!

9500 miles on the 98 SRX, re-ringed by original owner around 5000 miles i think...
6500 miles on the 02 Viper, re-ringed last winter at 5500 miles...

I used to have a 98 srx 700 and that thing had over 9000 miles before I had to rebuild it and get a new crank. I just wanted to add what mopar 1rules Im suprised that his buddy had a 97 sx that had over 10,000 trouble free miles cause two of my friends had a 97 and a 98 sx one with pipes and those sleds were notorious just like the 98 srx's for having bad cranks.

02 ER stretched to 136. 12,000 +. Reringed and new pistons at 9500. Cylinders were .0005 bigger than stock LOL! Backup sled to the Attak. My son rode it at the Feb TY ride. He was on my 97 600 XTC and was WAY happier on the ol' Viper!!

on the '97's the mag side crank bearings liked to go out. they were the cheap junk like the polaris triples had for bearings. then in '98 yamaha changed the bearings and no problems. my buddy has just gotten lucky i guess. only '97 i know of so far that hasn't had the mag crank bearings replaced. i think he might be treading on thin ice, but then if its lasted this long, maybe its just a good one that won't go down???

pto will have less compression than the center and mag cylinders on a stock viper head, as the pto dome of the head has a larger cc volume than the other 2. totally normal to see what you're getting for readings. yours is fine.....run it.

12000 km's on mine. Rings replaced at 10k. Never had a problem. Will do a top end plus gaskets/seals and crank bearings if needed at 20k.
These engines are pretty much the best in longevity as far a 2 strokes go.

Buddy has an sxr, 700 red head, which was piped for half its life. It's at around 23k km's and has blown a cylinder every year in the past 3 seasons (replaced one at a time). Most of the time at around 20k km's it's pretty much time for a rebuild if every thing is still stock.

i have 7765miles on the 02 viper and im rebuilding due to lack of carb maintenance but that said if well cared for bullet proof is for sure love love love yammie power and sound engineering!!!!!
