Stock Viper Reclutching

I want to play with the clutching on my 2003 Viper. It's all stock, 7000 miles with fresh rings. not concerned with top end. I have it apart to change the track. It's getting a new (OEM) SRX track so I am going to change the chaincase gears also. Has 22/38 now. This is going to be my young nephew's ride.
 
why new OEM track? isn't that the .92" lug height POS track? i would get a 1-1/4 ripsaw track. that 1-1/4 ripsaw will make you feel like you gave it aggressive clutching, due to it hooking up much better. my .02.

OK . Point taken. Anything is better than the worn out " upside down ice cream cone" stock track. I had a new SRX take off track laying around. This is a sled going to be ridden by my young teenage nephew. Trail riding only.
I ride an Apex GT. OK on the Ripsaw now what about the clutch set-up?
 
for clutch setups, there are a bunch. some guys on here run heel clickers and some run heavy hitters and some run OEM weights, etc. some just add a 4.5g rivet to the stock flyweights, replacing the lighter 3.6g rivet, to cure the over-rev. they are all good setups that work better than stock. kinda depends on what you want to spend. seeing as the sled is for your nephew, i'm assuming you don't want to spend much. you'll be suprised how much better the sled will feel w/the ripsaw track alone. maybe for now, just add a 4.5 g rivet to the flyweight, leaving the rest alone, or try TURKS cheap trail setup, which is to put in a 53/43 helix and yamaha green secondary spring, leaving the rest alone.
 
clutching

Not worried about the cost at all. I'd be willing to change the clutch weights, spring, helix and spring. I did my SRX with Tony B's specs and it really woke it up. I just know that some of the aftermarket kits are not right and there might be a better way to approach it. Just looking to improve on the stock setup.
 
don't just go and buy a "clutch kit".....like one from epi or bender. much better results will be had, if you piece one together yourself. you may want to try the tech section, as there are lots of clutch setups in there. you may find one for your liking.
 
JOE, JOSH IS CORRECT HERE. A NICE KICK IN THE PANTS FOR THE VIPER IS LEAVE PRIMARY ALONE, GO TO A 53/43 CAM WITH THE GREEN SPRING, I BELIEVE AT AROUND 70 TWIST. NICE GAIN RIGHT THERE. ESPECIALLY FOR A SLED FOR YOUR NEPHEW. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
heavy hitter clutch kit from simons, carbon tech reeds and spacers pickem me up 5 mph and 7 lengths over a buddies stocker that I was dead even with in the past.

yes, reeds are the same.

I Also Have A Brand New Set Of Reeds On The Factory Cages From When I Installed Aftermarket Ones On My Srx The Day I Bought It In 2001. The Viper Reeds Have 7000 Miles On Them So I Thought I Would Use The New Srx Ones Instrad Of Spending $$$ For Aftermarket Ones. I Did Replace The Rings On The Viper At 6000 Miles.

Question.: There Is A White Plastic Insert In Each Reed Cage. W T F Is It? Does It Need To Be There?

that white piece of plastic needs to be in there. it is called a "reed stuffer". it helps the air/fuel mixture not loose as much velocity, as it leaves the carb and enters the reed cage. anytime the air/fuel mixture goes from a tight space to a large space, the velocity is reduced. yamaha puts those "reed stuffers" in there, to keep the reduction of the velocity of the mixture to a minimum and the velocity of it up as much as possible.
