I'm getting ready to purchase an edge skid from a 2002 polaris 550 supersport. I'm told the skid is in excellent condidtion. Is this skid strong enough to put in my Viper being from a fan cooled machine with half the power? I mostly do trail riding - going over the washboard bumps and some jumps. Mainly replacing the skid for the comfort factor on long rides but I do like to play around a bit as well.

Skid from a 550 SS is the same as any other Edge skid from that year, I have an 02 out of an XC800 (i think)... watch the front shock mount on the rails for egged holes and the front arm (equivalent of Yamaha's "W" arm) for cracks where it meets the top tubes, I had to fix both those areas on mine.

I did some more checking for you.....
The shocks are only used in the 340-550 size sleds and some touring sleds. This tells me they are of the motion control hydraulic line of shocks. Meaning that after about 30 seconds of washboard or stutter bumps... they are completely compacted and of no use... you are getting tossed around the trails like a rag doll.
The front and rear arms are only used in the 800 during the 2001 model year.... but are still listed up to current for the smaller sleds. May be because of a different color....
My opinion is to pass on this skid... and find one much better. Pay close attention to shock packages as this is where the money is. My main reason not to use this skid.
You may also want to check out Ski-Doo SC-10II or even SC 10III...They are very much the same as the edge skid. The sc10 III has more travel than the SC10II.... but get one from a 2002, or 2003 ZX chassis (Legend, MXZ, etc)

What's the difficulty level in putting the SC-10III in the Viper? Can I find the measurements for the mount locations on this site? I was going towards the Edge because many people have it in their sleds with little difficulty and great results.

Thanks for the info Dave, I never even thought of that... guess thats reason #28353 not to listen to me, lol... Personally I like my Edge/SRX over the SC10 III (136)/Viper, but there are some differences between the two sleds that effect that opinion, the SC10III definitely does ride nice though, I just feel the transfer is better on the Edge...

THe guy who has the edge from the 550 SS says he has another from a 600 liquid cooled sled. I asked him to sonfirm the year for me. I believe the 2002 600 edge suspension came with the fox PPS shocks (correct me if I'm wrong). If you can get the dimensions Dave that would be great. He may have an SC10-III if the 600 edge does not work out.
