recoil rope and cleaning exhaust residue from belly pan

hi everyone,

Have any of you found a way to keep your recoil rope clean, either by running it through a pipe or hose? The brake dust does a number on it, and whatever touches the rope afterwards (gloves, suit, etc.) plus it wears where it rubs the chaincase.

Next question: How do you clean exhaust/oil residue off the belly pan? I've tried spray nine, wd40, super clean and brake cleaner, steel wool, etc. Nothing seems to work very well (and a few tend to discolour the belly pan). I guess I've never taken the time to take it all off, so now I can't find anything that will!

Clean the recoil rope with brake cleaner and a white t-shirt. It will get most of the dust off. I use to do this once a year and it works. Also, when pulling to start pull away from jacket (out).
 
I just ordered a couple of products from a company called SledBrite. I ordered a belly pan cleaner and an aluminum cleaner. I have hopes the belly pan cleaner will clean the exhaust residue off the exterior of the belly pan. I also have tried a large no. of cleaning products with limited success. I'll let you know how the SledBrite belly pan cleaner works.

the easiest way to fix this problem is to replace the rope with a key :rofl: , never have to touch that dirty rope again.
 
Every Yamaha I have ever owned seems to be a lot more difficult to keep clean under the hood. My 99 SRX looked like it was 10 yrs old after 2 seasons, my 04 Viper S was the same way and now 02 SRX is giving me fits. My 02 has slight salt residue stains, brake dust and exhaust leak splatter issues and I have soaked and powerwashed with almost every chemical out there. It seems like the raw aluminum and bellypan are really pouris (sp) and once their dirty, its there forever??? Back in the summer at West Marine I saw a product for cleaning salt off engines and outdrives (I think it was called salt buster or something) so I might try a marine grade product for the little bits of salt issues I have. Otherwise I might just tear the engine bay apart and detail everything unless someone has success with something Im not aware of....
 
ouch mod...lolllll how you doing these days.I am waiting for snow but I don't think it's coming for a long time yet.Looked at long range forcast,it is pathetic. Could be another sucky winter again :o| :o| #$%&*
 
going pretty good .... all protector and studd are in ....need some bearing and switch little things in the primary clutch ... :EXER:
 
yeah yeah laugh all you want,I suggest putting some studs on you shoes..may help with the traction there a little..\\come on...you can do it mod...lmao!!!!!! ;)! :homework:

Thanks for the tips... not sure about the key :-) (actually, that's what I miss most from my Exciter II!), but looking forward to hearing about sledbrite belly pan cleaner. I wanted to buy some last time I was at Royal (parts dealer) but they had none in stock. I have no issue cleaning the inside (exhaust splatter, most of the brake dust, but the outside is a pain.
