Gas porting 2 stroke pistons??

Has anyone heard of GAS PORTING two stroke pistons??? Does anyone have it done in any of their race motors???

I have heard of gas porting on hgh performance 4 stroke engines. A ring of small holes are drilled in the piston from the dome to the back of the top piston groove. The idea is to direct the high pressure combustion gases to the back of the top ring to force the ring out, making a better seal with the cylinder. I have no idea if it works. I have seen this done on pro stock drag racing engines.

there was a guy over on bansheehq who did some testing w/that on a banshee race motor, and there was no additional gain in hp, so i would have to believe that there was not enough addtional seal to the rings added, from the added gas port holes, to get the compression to be enough better, to get a measurable amount of hp gain on the dyno.

I was reading some articles on the local www.moparts.com website and it spoke of it working at 7000 rpm and higher.. I thought of sled motors because my bigblock spins UP TO 7000 and I DON'T PUSH IT PAST 7000 !!! Its a BIGBLOCK,, you don't need to go past 7000 rpm... My 572 stroker motor HAS the gas porting and it costs around $500.00 to do that to the pistons.. I realize it will WEAR THE RINGS OUT FASTER,, but,, MAYBE it helps the cylinder wear MORE EVENLY????

nosboy, Why would it only work @ 7k anfd higher? Why wouldn't it work @ a lower rpm (say 5k)?


I don't think a sled has high enough compression for this to work. If you were concerned about blowby and/or making more compression, could you install a stacked ring instead of a gapped ring?

I don't know much about it at all.. I read at www.moparts that below 7000 rpm's it did NOT make any extra power,,,but,,, I guess it kept the piston better centered in it's bore and kind of "slowed down" the slapping motion of the piston... it made more HP over 7000 rpm's
