My Viper deal gone bad.....

Hello Niko I Was Reading Your Post And Had A Similar Issue When I First Got My Used 02 Viper..... Check The Water Pumps Mechanical Seal Its A Weird Spring Loaded Set Up That Can Leak And Look Really Bad. I Replaced Mine The Job Is Not Too Bad Search The Forum You Will Find Detailed Posts On This. But Before You Do This Try Running It Up To Temp A Few Times On The Stand And Let It Cool Down Fully And Repeat.. The Reason I Say This Is The Following Season I Had The Same Leak And All I Had To Do Is Get The Motor Hot A Few Times And Good To Go For 3500 Miles Last Season.....

If you determine it is the water pump shaft seal as a last resort, prior to taking it apart, try putting a few ounces of"AT-205 RE-SEAL" by atp in the anti freeze and use it for a few days or hours of running. Its a very well kept secret for transmission, crankshaft, power stearing, water pump seals ect ect. I have used it on numerous applications and it definately works at softening up up old seals and I have had some success in stopping leaks...might work on the water pump seal.

I thought the base gaskets were metal?

Thanks Tony, I might have to pick your brain a little this coming week......I believe it is coming form the water pump....
 
Yeah, very possible. I had an 02 viper a few yrs back that was leaking because of a bad gasket on the water pump.

...and as SS-Bob mentioned, get it hot and look for leaks after shutting it down. The coolant temp will rise along with system pressure right after shut down - for about 5-15 minutes before it starts dropping. Also try a pressure tester if available and pump it up to the max pressure stamped on the cap and start it for a few minutes to check it dynamically.

You really want to pin-point the leak before tearing it down otherwise you're more than likely guessing.
