I just bought a 2002 viper with bender pipes. The pipes where put on when new and the person I bought it from had it set up by dealer and says it rock & rolls. It has a 1 1/4 predator track with 288 studs which I think is over kill.My question is he geard it down to 23/38 and put 8 tooth drivers and cut 2 teeth of the speedo gear.It is better to run stock gearing or leave the gears the way they are? Will the speedo be close to gps or way off as usual? He also has the bender clutching in it with the stock helix. He told me it worked best that way. Thanks for any help

he geared down because of the 8 tooth drivers if you put stock gearing back in there it will feel slow. i would see if there is a better gear set up rather than put it back to stock.

With 22/38 gearing and 8 tooth drivers it is geared fairly "Low"
23/38 = 1.65:1
9/8 = 1.125
1.125 x 1.65 = 1.86 : 1 final ratio
[I believe stock was 22/38 = 1.73 : 1]
This should give lots of acceleration and if it was not studded so heavily probably a lot of track spin. The higher then stock [8700-8800] RPM of Bender pipes should still allow a decent top speed. If you want more top end you either have to gear it up more ie: 24 or 25/38 or ,if you have the track clearance, go back to 9 tooth drivers.

Gearing
Been there, done that! I run almost the same setup. I ran a 23 and 24 top gear to comp for 8 tooth anti's. Slowed the sled down. Went back to 22 top with the 8 tooth drivers. For me it's all about corner to corner. That being said it ran 106 on radar with the 22 top. For holeshot power you should run Heel Clickers. I've ran just about every clutch combo. You may loose a little top end but i don't think you can beat the clickers for instant brute force power.

I double checked the chain case and it is geared 23/38.I have never run heel clickers but willin to try anything once. With the amount of studs, traction should not be an issue other than top speed.I want as much corner to corner pull as possible, got to fight off some fast sleds and I know I can't take them top end.I might put a ripsaw on it but not to sure yet.I also ordered the torque arm and want to change the primary spring ,It has the bender power shift kit in it. Thanks
24/38 gears will get you back to stock ratio with 8 tooth drivers

Going to leave the 23/38 gears in it see how it is.By what I have been told, it is the best way togo.I going to try the heel clickers in it Thanks for the help
Curious to see how accurate your speedo is with the 2 teeth cut off.
I also have 8t and it would be nice to have a semi accurate speedo LOL

Had the sled out today on my road and I'm getting 110 on speedo(2 teeth removed on speedo pick-up).The problem is I;m revin 9100 on the tach and seems to be a little slow to pull the rpm from 7500 to 8600 and then it revs to 9100 instantly.I've read alot of posts on here and it seems nobody likes the 8ek weights.I never double checked the power valves to see if they where clean and it has and old belt on it.I did install the torque arm from yamaha. It definitly pulls better than my wife's 2004 viper stock.I see why people piped these sleds it feels like a whole different sled than a stocker Thanksx

The sound of the motor when it hits 8900 makes me believe it show run around 8800-9000 rpm.Are these Yamaha tachs out by very much? Thanks

I have a digital tach that you can point at the plug or actually clamp on the plug wire to read the revs. I have checked all my Yamaha Sled tachs against the digital tach and they are all reading acurately.[unlike the speedos!!!]
