There is specs that a moter builder follows of his own or has purchased from a company to open ports to a predetermaned size.The exhast port is left alone unless differant size bore is used or head\decking work done.
blue who-----not true. the exhaust port is where approx 60% of the power is to be unleashed. don't need to wait for some cylinder boring, or cylinder decking work to be done, to start working on the exhaust. little hint.....those auxillary exhaust ports look pretty small, don't they??
ottawaair-----a properly ported cylinder, will give you a noticable increase in throttle response, it will be quicker @ picking up rpms, and you will be able to handle a more aggressive clutch setup, do to the added horsepower. if you have your srx ported and try running it again, with the OEM clutch setup, you will be over-reving, from the added horsepower, like already stated.
Pauljones-----no need to polish the exhaust port, so you can see yourself in it. you need nothing more than a smooth sanded finish.....120 to 180 grit. people think that a polished exhaust port or intake is what makes the power.....totally a myth. the only reason to smooth/polish out the exhaust ports surface finish, is only to keep oil from sticking, and then burning, creating carbon. also, never polish the intake or anything like that, that's intaking the mixture into the cylinder. YOU WILL LOSE HP BY DOING THAT. you want a slight rough finish, to help the mixture get atomized more. otherwise if its polished soo smooth, the fuel mixture just beads on the surfaces and doesn't get mixed as throughly, so the hp goes down. i've heard of guys getting all their ports polished up to they could see thereselves in them, and then when they went out on the dyno to see what HP gains they were expecting to see, they saw nothing but a 4-5 hp drop!! the surface finish of a fine bead blasted surface, is more than smooth enough for transfer ports, boost port, and anything on the intake skirt of the cylinder. just enough surface roughness, to help aid fuel mixture atomization.
also, for those that want to do it themselves, and their buddies told them to just go in there and make all the ports bigger, don't listen to that for a second. you will "F" stuff up, quicker than you can blink. there's times where it takes no more than raising a port 1mm or less, to get the required time/area value or duration needed, to match the desired BMEP @ that rpm. and every motor is different.....meaning, what you did w/the ports on that ski-doo motor or whatever, isn't necessarily what you will be doing on your srx. the manufacturers have some ports already good enough. you only got to help out the ports that lack. also, what the engine is used for, dictates what the porting layout is kinda going to be.
