Buy SRX 700 or SXviper?

I had my srx blow up up on me.. but stuff was changed in it and air box gutted and a whole bunch of stuff..... get one thats stock and hasnt been played with and your safe... once you start playing around with them thats when they start getting sensitve.. but with the right help of people you can mod them and have them just as reliable as stock...

I learned the hard way on my first srx as the previous owner tweaked evertying on it like gutting the airbox changing all the jets and god knows what else...
this time around I made sure I know exacly what was done to it... and that it wasnt overplayed with... only reason I felt comfterble buying this 01 I got now was because it was owned by a decently known member here (bendersrx) was tuned by turk mrviper and a few other well known members... if it wasnt for that I would of not even though twice about it...

I wanted to stay away from another srx... since I had major bad luck with the first one but decided to give it a benefit of the dought and im going to try another one this year... ive talked to alot of ppl that had srx's and they all say they are happy with it... reliability and everything

Gotta remember that the SRX has been around for 4 more years than a Viper... start comparing 02 SRX's to 02 Vipers then they are pretty even... I have 6000 miles on my Viper, it was all original, I re-ringed it as preventative maintenance last winter.

If I was just getting into sleds again I think I would keep an eye out for an 01 SRX... and I would buy a Viper over a single bulb SRX... but i do a lot of night riding, so thats my reason...

Low and fast is fun, but the bumps kill ya, so then ya toss Viper shocks in the rear and match the front, and ya take away the "low" part of the SRX... but it is still one hell of a ride, I love my SRX and Viper, it's going to be tough to pick one or the other this winter once I get the work done to the Viper...
 
i have heard about the crank issue with the 98s but all others are ok as long as they are maintained such as snomofo has stated. i have had no problems with mine and its got over 7000 miles on it now. the susspensions arent that bad but do recomend going with long travel, such as a viper shock, if your a hard ditch banger its common to break the w-arm but they do make reinforced ones that are well worth it, they last.
i wouldnt trade mine for anything, but i also have a viper er for my wife and like it also, both are really reliable. I still say most of that comes frome running good gas and good oil all the time.

Some 99's had crank problems also, from 2000 on, Yamaha had the crank pins welded at the factory.

Now since 2000+ used the new crank, couldn't you buy a factory crank with the welded crank pins and replace the crank ijn your 98/99 and have the problem fixed?

If you are thinking about a 98-99, take the vin# to your local Yamaha dealer or phone the Yamaha service number, they could check to see if it was done under warranty. I would think it would be less costly to have your crank sent out to get balanced and welded than it would be to buy a brand new one from Yamaha.

Yamaha isnt keeping service records over 10yrs anymore, ran into that problem last year when I took the Vin off my 98 SRX in to get checked...

Thanx, I didn't know they had a 10 year limit on service records, you learn something new every day.

I bought my 02 Viper ER new in 03 and have hardly ridden it the last 2 years. The sled has approx. 13k miles on it and the motor has never been apart. May not be the fastest Viper out there but it still gets over 100mph pretty quick.As far as reliability either the SRX or the SXV will always get you home if you treat it right.Keep the valves clean,fog it for storage and make sure the carbs are cleaned before riding each year.I would buy another Viper in a minute.As far as putting a Viper suspension in a SRX...To me it would be a waste of time.If you're going to the trouble of changing the suspension then use an M-10 or even an SC-10(ANY MODEL)They are both far better than the Viper No-Action suspension.
 
99 Srx 600

I owned a 99 SRX 600 that went down twice. First time it was bad gas caused detonation. The 2nd time my wife was riding it and the oil pump quit working...amazingly it went about 30 miles without the pump working.
