Up to 1995 and the 96's with the exception of XT model Vmax'es had a version of the original Pro-Action rear suspension. Take a look at the shock body to see if they are a sealed body or can be taken apart ?
All the following sleds had the original Pro-Action rear suspension.
1983(?) to 1991 SRV 540
1983 to 1991 Vmax 540
1991 to 1993 Exciter
1992 to 1997 Vmax 750/800 with the exception of the 97 XT models
1994-1996 Vmax 5/600 with the exception of the 96 XT models

95 Vmax shocks
If they are OEM, they are not rebuildable (except for the 1996 VMax XT shocks, which are rebuildable).

Sorry to drag up an old thread... I picked up a 1996 VMAX 600 XT. The one that everyone stated above had rebuildable shocks.
Is this true? Can any shock-rebuilder/service department that does aftermarket ones, rebuild these old ones?
I know both are blown... and a new shock is over $400, and I can't find ANY replacements besides the factory yamaha ones.
Closest I got was KIMPEX brand on ebay, listed for VMAX 600 XT, but - the KIMPEX # does not match up with the Yamaha number...
Any tips please? I have a local shop that rebuilds shocks, but - I don't know for a fact these are able to be rebuilt, and I may ride as is for now if they are NOT since I can't afford new ones. Don't want to pull them to find out they can't be serviced you know?

I have the same sled and to my understanding the answer is YES. I am fortunate that mine are still in great shape.

I got the name from another sled forum, and I called them today.
Firstly - he knows all about the 96 VMAX XT 600, and it's uniqueness.
He verified that the shocks were that model, that year ONLY.
He also verified that they are rebuildable. Not only that,
as of the date of this post - I asked him if he could do it for the cost he does the TSS rebuilds, (the front shocks) and he said yes, depending on parts.
So basically about $110 + shipping to and fro.
They also offer full front TSS shock rebuilds / valving and no foam oil etc.
He was very knowledgable, the prices are great, and he said about 1 week turnaround time once he gets the shocks.
Will be pulling my shocks off tomorrow or Saturday, and then sending them out, I'll let you know what all the pricing worked out and the quality of the work, but I am phsyced!
