Ok, please bare with me on this one....

I own a 2003 Mnt Viper, pretty heavily modded. I did buy it with SLP triple pipes installed, Atacc, and heel clickers from the prior owner. It has Heel Clicker 40-10's installed with red primary spring. Secondary is stock Mnt Viper straight 45 degree helix and stock black Yammi spring. Prior owner occasionally brought her out west to Colorado, not sure of elevation.

I modded it further with Boysen power reeds, MPI Peak Head, better skis and others....

In March. I plan to head out to Wyoming (Tog). As you guys probably know, elevations are extremely high at 11,000+ feet at highest. Really high!!!! And I want my sled dialed in right before I get out there.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Hauk 45/41 spring. Although it's not too bad now, I want front end "torque" so to speak and really, really fast back shift.

In my esteemed colleagues' learned opinions, do you guys think this helix will help me?? with my goals????? My sled isn't bad now, but of course I'm always looking for a little better and clutching isn't my strongest of suits. I also plan on installing roller clutching someday........

I'd go for the silver secondary spring... Its supposed to be the best for backshift.... Im in the Hunt for a 50/40 helix for my setup, as i heard this is a good helix for upshift and backshift....


Are your heelclicker's dialed for the SLP'S?

I believe my HC's are dialed pretty well for my SLP's. The sled shifts well. It is also set up for powder now -- top end is a little over 100, but not much. And it really goes, shifting smooth. Until I reigned the skid in a little, she used to just wheelie (of course, he has also removed the transfer rods, which I reinstalled -- long story and already discussed in another thread)......

I believe the prior owner was friends with a Yammi tech where he was from, and he installed the SLP's, HC red spring, and 40-10 HC's together, for purpose of riding out west.

I don;t believe he tampered with secondary at all, from what I can tell......

Any other thoughts??? Anybody??? (Turk!!!!???????)

Is that silver spring you spoke of a HC spring or a Yammi spring?

You think that 45/41 helix will be too much of a dog on the front end?

The silver spring is a Yamaha spring...

Ive never ran a 45/41 helix, however it should have the same upshift as our stock (45 deg) helix's however, maybe better upshift could be achieved by going more towards 50 on the upshift since you have some extra ponies from the pipes.


What do you engage at? I am shooting for like 3500 on my setup, as to not spin the track much on takeoff to eliminate the big trench hole when starting off...
 
P.S. if your looking on installing a roller sometime soon, maybe that will be a good thing to do before spending a bunch of money on the stock Yamaha secondary...


I just wish i could get a Team Tied for cheap... We have one down in our shop right now for testing, still needs assembly and then we need some snow to get some real world numbers on it...
 
Hey Dirtjumper, good call on the engagement. Not 100% as I'm thinking to last season, but my recollection is engagement is a little higher than your sweet spot -- my sled engages at more like 4500 - 4800 rpm --- a grand or so higher than your optimum. Not bad, but a little higher. I too would like to see that lowered....

And as I recall, there is always a little "clunk" from the clutch each time it engages -- not sure what that is coming from. But a noticeable clunk happen.

As I said, clutching is not my strongest of suits.....

check out slp's website. look for tuning info on their pipes. they used to be available online in a pdf, last time i looked, but thats been a few years back.if i recall, a straight 43* was recommended by slp for elevations above 5000', with their pipes. . you should have a green spring in the secondary now. that 45 was stock, with a green spring. yamaha did not make a black spring per say, all the springs were black with a color swatch. double check, and then you will know if its been played with. not up on the aftermarket clutch products, but i think slp has an answer, if turk doesnt.
 
Last season I had a line on an MPI roller clutch from an RJ tech (Gordy). He was parting out his Mnt Viper at the time. I screwed up by not grabbing that up when I had the chance.

Oh well. The roller secondary is definitely something I should look into.....

Hey Snowdad:

The spring is all black -- no lines at all. Nothing. He never mentioned it, but it's possible he installed a HC black spring when he tuned it......

But I know the helix is the stock one -- it has the stamp right on it!

yea i know gordy, did he end up parting that sled? last time i saw it, the sled was in my parents garage, cause he was leasing a house from us... That sled did rip pretty good though... Thats the sled that got me hooked on my Viper...
 
As for the clunk, are you sure its coming from your clutch? My guess its from your brake rotor to jackshaft play... Mine does it aswell.
 
While not the same animal, I have done a little srx running at altitude. Dn10's with 4.5's in each hole and stock 43 with green at 70 worked great on my bud's 2000. That was a 159 geared at 19/42 (I think, it's been a while).

I ran my 780 out in Cooke last year with 40-10 heelclickers and a team roller. Thing pulled like a train.

Nothing wrong with a straight cut out in the hills if that's what you have. Personally I wouldn't mess with a 45/41 unless I had it in the toolbox already. I did use a 45/39 in my 600 one year, and it worked out ok, but wasn't great. Had a hard time getting the primary to work with it at altitude. Here at home it was great though.

Ya Gordy's sled was a beast. He still has parts from it still i believe.... Great guy though. But I think about half (literally) of his old sled is riding around on my chasis now! But I was a little light on the funding to pick up his roller secondary. Snap!

Hey Dirtjumper that's also a great thought...... I had thought it was coming from the clutch -- just a light thud and a slight jerk into motion -- but your thoughts are most likely the culprit!!!! Thx much!

Thx Ryan. I'm pretty sure my gearing is stock. But I guess i am wrong about many things as have been pointed out tonight! This is absolute proof about how great TY is.

I'm thinking maybe I should just leave it as is. He must have installed that black spring aftermarket. Maybe I'll call Super Torquer tomorrow and ask if they have an all black spring for powder/climbing....

But leaving that straight 45 degree helix seems like it would limit back shift, which I don't want..... But then, would going to 43 or 41 degrees straight helix help that much?????

Urghhhh! Clutching hurts my brain!!!!!!

I woulda loved to pick up that secondary aswell. Ill see if i can get my stocker dialed though with my new setup before i go out and purchase a roller.
 
when i first got this srx i couldn't see the color mark on the secondary spring until i removed it and cleaned it, the color mark isn't very big and where mine was a silver it didn't take much grime to make it look all black, even clean it's hard to see installed just a thought
