1998 SRX w/ headlight issue

I'm new to this forum, it looks very nice.

I would like to ask a question. I have a 1998 SRX w/ about 7,500 miles that has a headlight that turns off and on, on its own occasionally. Its just been a minor annoyence the last few years but its gotten to the point of not working hardly at all. Anyone had the same issue? Point me in the right direction for a repair.

I had the engine out two seasons ago at the begining of the problem and couldent find any wiring issues. Could it be the lighting coil or the stator?

I would think that the stator would cause more issues than just your headlight going out. Not sure on the lighting coil. I had a 98 and that exact thing was happening. Ended up being a rub through in the wire harness right where it goes under the engine behind the carbs. If the sled was running I could pull lightly on the harness and make the lights go on and off. You may be able to do a continuity test on the wires going to the headlight to see if they are shorting to anything.

like stated in the first reply, check the wires where they tee off out of the main harness up to the handle bars . i think you will find a few broken wires there with 7500 miles.

Do you think I will need to remove the engine to access the affected wires or just the airbox?

Start with just the airbox and carbs. See if you find anything there. If not you'll have to get the harness out from under the engine to check it. Some people tie a piece of string or wire to the harness on the exhaust side. Then pull the harness through under the motor leaving the wire or string by the exhaust. When your done checking the harness, use the string to pull the wires back through under the engine. The other option is to pull the harness through and reroute it so you don't have the problem again. I had to remove all the tape from the harness and really check it well to find the rub through. Doesn't take much.
