Exciter vs Phazer vs SRV540

based on budget, and the year of the exciter, Id say Phazer.

I always loved the looks and performance, and ald faithful fan-cooled is just that much better for a "green" snowmobiler.....

I owned a 1991 Phazer II for 3 years... bought it and sold it three years later after doubling the miles for exactly what I bought it for. I LOVE the Phazer. Incredible sled, no issuses. Great on gas, has good power, reliable, light, easy to drive.
Simply went with my current Viper for the comfort, looks, and obviously the big step up in power. Wish I still had my PZ II.

Exciter's are known as Exploder's... SRV's are good as well, but go with the newer PZ II.

My opinion would also be the Phazer. I had an 87 that i put an aaen pipe on, reeds and some clutching and it was an absolute blast and actually pretty quick. They are light reliable and fun. Fastest sled out there, nope, but reliable, fun and easy to work on.

I have a pzII for sale, its the back-up to the back-up sled so it needs to go, has a aaen pipe on it as wellhttp://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64255

Bought a 1994 Phazer II LE maybe 6 or 7 years ago for a third sled for my daughter or a greenhorn guest riding along with us. It is a great little light, sled and darn near bullit proof. i have 7800 miles on the original motor. I still like getting on it and cranking it up on tight twisty trails. the only thing i have done to it, Like the others said, get a pipe, jet it correctly, clutch kit and a better track doesn't hurt. the stock track on mine was like 1/2 tall, useless on hard pack unless you like sliding around alot. Put a 1" Ice claw on it and it made a huge difference in acceleration. IMO you can't go wrong with a decent Phazer.
