Help studs for Viper

Need some advice guys. My wife's sled has 1 3/4 in track setup for powder.I bought it late last year and she needs more traction. We mainly trail ride in U.P. Michigan . Can I use 2" studs with tunnel protectors or will they be too long? Any ideas? Track is like new and if I have too I'll sell it and just get her another track. Thanks in advance.

Hey neighbor,

It's my understanding that your Viper isn't any different than my SRX which mean no, you can't unless you go to a smaller driver.

IMO - trail riding the U.P. is a lot different than down state and studs aren't as required as they are below the bridge. The traffic is mostly lighter and you don't have the iced corners you have down state. Having said that, I still can say that studs have got me out of some trouble not of my own making both in the U.P. and the lower so I can understand you wanting to stud it.

I'm sure others (Viper owners) will pipe in, but I'm fairly sure you're going to have to swap tracks or drivers. If it were me, I'd swap the track to a 1" and stud it with 144 gold diggers. Or let her lead ;>)
 
Like sno said, 2 in studs will be to long. You would be better going with a 1 in track with studs. You will be giving up some of the powder capability, I dont run studs, each person has their own setup they like, Live downstate and I still do not run studs down here..Of course I would rather be riding in the UP. =)
 
Read some reviews on Ice Rippers and try one of those out. You also got to think about how heavy her track is going to be with a bunch of 2" studs in it....But if that is what you want then there is no question you are going to have to go to 8t drivers.

Looking at Amsnow and Snowgoer, it appears to help with breaking vs. non-studded. Camoplast claims similar results vs. 96 conventional studs which seems a stretch IMO but that's just a hunch.

Again, assuming your Viper is the same as my SRX, I can't see you not having potential issues with contact with the HX. I have a 1" aggressor with "1.075 Woodys along with front and rear protectors and if not for running my track a bit tighter than I like, I'd have slight contact. Looks like the lugs go completely accross on the Ice ripper which means you'll have to clip it at the windows or let is wear away. I clipped my 1" but would have been comfortable letting it wear away. Another 1/4" of rubber to wear away might produce a lot of heat for a while, dunno.

IMO - If she were mine, I'd rather she had the best stopping ability under the widest range of conditions which I think conventional studding would provide.
