Putting on drive belt, need help...

Hi, Im 16 and realize im not the strongest and when trying to put on My 99 Vmax 500's belt I just cant do it. I can get it halway on, and the secondary sheaves open but cant get it all the way on. Anyone have any tools, tips or advice? Thanks. :bash: :o|
 
it can be difficult and a pain especially when on the trails.You can purchase a belt change tool from rich at rich motorsports like for around $30.I have that on both my sleds.It spreads the sheaves for you as you turn the little l wrench.Otherwise you really have to push and turn the sheave by hand and try to slip belt over before it springs back on you.

  1. Set the parking brake
  2. Wear gloves (leather works fine)
  3. Put the belt around the primary and over the top of the secondary - be sure it is in the right direction
  4. Place the palm of your right hand on the top of the helix (the farthest outside part of the secondary toward the left side of the sled)
  5. Place the left hand on top of the belt and the inner sheave edge of the secondary
  6. Push in with the right hand and toward the center of the sled
  7. At the same time push towards the back of the sled with the left hand on the belt and inner sheave
  8. You might be surprised how easy it is
 
Do it Ding's way but grab a 12mm wrench, put it on one of the 3 helix nuts, try to tighten it, and push in. Now you have a belt install tool that doubles as a wrench
 
Pump some iron little bro and get some guns so you can get the job done!!!

I got it guys, Thanks. I opened the sheaves and put a small filed wooden wedge to hold them open, then put my belt on and removed the wedge. Thanks for the offer 2000SRX but I will be fine. Keep it. Freebies arent my thing. I think lifting weights will be a better option HAHA. Helps for getting unstuck also!

Never thought of that one, good idea grape.
 
I use the wood wedge trick to hold them open while I clean them up with a scotchpad.

I follow Ding's instructions to the point of opening the secondary.

At that point, I push the inner sheave (movable) in while turning it back with the palm of my left hand while pushing the belt down with my right as it's opening. Basically using the belt to hold the sheaves open. I'd say the belt needs to be about halfway down the sheaves before allowing for the belt to ride around and over the outer sheave from the bottom. Same for removal except I pull up on the belt as the sheaves are opening again using the belt to keep them open.

On a Polaris you don't have the option of pushing on the helix so pushing the sheaves open with the left hand is the only option.

Hope I didn't add to the confusion.
