I just got a deal on a 03 sxviper has 0nly 1500 miles on it..The original owner didnt take to good of care of it. When we picked it up last week we tried starting it and it sounded like it was only running on 2 cylinders and wouldnt stay running. Last night we cleaned the carbs and found the pilot jets were clogged in 2 of the carbs..Then we took a look at the powerValves and they were just nasty..took close to 2 hours to clean those things off. (The guy had 2 quarts of diffrent kinds of gasstation snowmobile oil in the seat) UGGG! put the powervalves back together, kicked the mouse out of the air box, and then hooked everything else back up.. Fired the thing up and it just smoked like a freight train, and it wouldnt stay running...Reeds are good,, Compression is 95 pto 118 on the other 2.?????? is that right??? Ive read a couple threads where they say there is a diffrence but tha much..

we also checked the cables and they look like they are in good working order...

Plugs? Maybe with the bad gas and oil they are messed up, Did you drain all the old gas and oil and start new?

She's probably loaded/flooded out with that dead cyl running, get it running on all three and warm it up good keeping the rpm's up. Check oil pump cable make sure it's not unseated.

i concerned with that compression.

yeh! compression is a worry.. i took the y piece off...and looked at the cylinder..looked like a cylinder with 1500 miles on it...rings looked ok too..well as much as you can see looking through the exahust hole.. i guess..

what is the factory setting for the fuel screws on the carbs..they were all set diffrent ranging from 2-2.5 turns...they are at 2 now

yeh i drained whatever oil he had in there out...tank only had a few gallons in it and i just topped it off with premium

I would suggest getting all the fuel out of there...use it in your snow blower or something. Get the tank as empty as possible then fill with known good fuel with a bit of gas line anti freeze in it. Water is heavier then fuel and will sit in the bottom of the tank with all the other crud and obviously thats where the fuel line draws from.
-change the plugs again and run it for awhile to see if the other cylinder kicks in.
-check that the exhaust isn't plugged somewhere with a mouse mansion
-ensure that the choke plungers are actually returning to their seats when the choke is turned off
-check for spark on all three cylinders
-make sure the plug wires are on the right cylinders[a long shot]

pto cylinder comp will be lower than other 2, cause of the cc size of the pto head dome

also, stock fuel screw setting is 1-7/8. sounds like the pilot circuit isn't fully cleaned out.

ok.. i took the carbs back off..recleaned them...pilots are beautiful.. got everything back together and fired it up....Smokes like a freight train still..pto plug is wet and the other two look good..so i pulled the jugs to look at the rings and pistons...they all look new.. I have decent spark on all three plugs..but can the pto side be kinda low??? The wash looked wierd on top of the pistons..it was solid black..couldnt really see any tell tail signs of it shooting in or out of the exhaust...cleaned the tops of it off a bit with carb cleaner...you could kinda tell then .. What rpm should the power valves be opening?? There isnt much action on the servo when im reving this up and down

Did you replace the plugs?

Did you set the fuel screws?

Did you check the compression fully warmed up with it at wot ?

Did you check & adjust oil cable?

Are you sure its only running on 2? or is it just running bad?
-if it actually is running on 2 try removing the plug cap on it and another cylinder and interchange them, see if the problem follows the plug cap.
-did you check your reeds?
-make sure the air bleeds right at the front of the carb throats are all clean
-check float level + needle + seats on all the carbs
-could it be the TORS? have you properly adjusted the throttle cable ?
Maybe this sled is low mileage for a reason...this problem could have been plaguing the previous owner as well so he parked it. It is definately something that should be fairly easy to track down as it sounds like it is not an itermittent issue.

My viper had a pinched wire where the stator wires come from the engine, There is a little piece of steel that holds wire away from the spinning magnito! Take off your pull cord assembly and have a look and wiggle the wires a little. My viper really ticked me off! It was acting as if it were running on two cylinders and used to run like crap. Just something to check!

get the track off the ground, start it and rev the piss out of it ! sounds like the tar that was used for oil has it loaded up. DEFINATELY drain that crappy oil out. Maybe the oil injector needs adjusted also.

Yeh it has something wrong with the oil..with the short time i have it running it fills the pipes up with yamalube...almost looks good enough to reuse..cables looks fine..havent had time to mess with it the last couple of days..will tomorrow though..

I don't have my book but the powervalves start opening at 6600 and are fully open at 7200 (approx). stuck valves wouldn't give you that symptom. you'd notice it while riding (maybe) but not starting it. My SRX always smokes the first time i start it in the fall, and for a while. How long did you let it run?

I dont know if smokes is a good word for it. Leaving the garage door open, and reving it up and down for less then a minute. Leaves you blinded by the fumes and running for the door...:) Ill look at it again tonight before giving up and takin it in..Already wasting some good snow..:)
