More out of my '85 SS440

Hey guys,
My little 440 rocks, very fun to ride. But when trying to keep up with the bigger sleds, it lacks a bit. I don't have the cash to upgrade to something newer so I'll stick with the oldies for right now. What can I do to that little motor to make it run faster? Pipes? Carb? Etc.....

Just had an idea. What if I took at y-pipe from a phazer and swapped it with the y-pipe on the 440? I have a PSI pipe from a phazer. Would this work???
 
heres an idea, getcha an intake system off a phazer too. carb boots, carbs and boost bottle. all should just bolt on. if you use the twin carbs and PSI phazer pipe you will need to update the carbs for mid range burn downs. all easy stuff. heck i got everything minus the boost bottle...
 
Not a bad idea. The thing is, I am clueless when it comes to messing with carbs. I have a phazer with a bad motor that I could swap everything. I tried the y-pipe swap and the phazer pipe was too wide for the exhaust ports.
 
yes, the phazer y-pipe has a funny mounting with the two inner bolts being right close together. what if you just tried swaping the pipe by itself. if it fit you would probably need a different clutch spring...

the carb swap should be pretty strait forward. although finding an air box to fit might be a different story. maby a couple of K&N's. keep an eye on your plugs for jetting. this i think would give you good top end with little clutch modifications (if any). if the boost bottle interferes with the cooling shrouds, and wont fit either way dont worry, carb boots from a SRX 600/700 should mount to the SS cylinders and eliminate the boost bottle....
 
Shaweet! I've tried the just the pipe it self and it won't fit. The y-pipe from the ss is at an angle and wouldn't fit. I have some clutch springs from a parts sled we have, but i can't tell the difference between them. And I don't have a clutch too to get the damn thing apart. I've heard of people who just gut out their airboxes, does this do anything performance wise? thanks for the feedback.
