I have a 96 XT and ran great last winter. Spring came and I fogged the engine and put in some stabil. Then a month ago I cleaned the carbs and just filled the tank last week. So that is the only thing I touched. Now my issue is I let the sled warm up and go for a ride and it is very sluggish, then it runs fine. Get going down the trail and runs sluggish again almost like the choke is on top speed of only 20 mph, then great and the sluggish, you get my point. only went a couple of miles. got home and pulled the plugs and they were black and very wet. could this be old gas or should i pull the carbs again or any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Jason

then post back....

Pull carbs again clean and blow out all jets and passages with shop air, make sure you can see daylight through them when held up to the light, check needles and float for spec take your time, and get fresh new fuel 89 oct.

i just wanted to see if anyone was interested. I pulled the carbs off and noticed only one was working. So i pulled the top off of one and the screw for the throttle linkage fell out so it was running on one cylinder. tightened both carbs up and put 50 miles on last night. Thanks for all the suggestions. Jason

Thanks for posting back Jason yes theres always interest when someone needs/looking for a fix no matter how little it is,glad you got it fixed.

we had that happen too on our 94 VM use loc-tight putting it back together.

Just a little suggestion as I had this happen to me, put a dab of blue loctite on the threads of that screw to prevent it from coming loose again as the vibration form the motor is what caused your issue. Blue loctite is easily removed as the red is some tough stuff.

Did you ensure that both carbs are opening the same amount, meaning to check to make sure that they are in sync?

Yup
