Clutch Setup with roller rooster secondary

Hi guys, I am having some trouble this year with my clutching. I didn't change anything so i'm not sure what happened. First off I did have the engine out so there is a slight possibility the alignment is off. So the problem is that my belt is slipping very bad. When I first went out I had the secondary wrapped at 70 with a pink spring just like last year. I could get moving fine but then it sounded like the belt just dropped in the secondary and then started slipping. I tried increasing the wrap 10 at a time until I got to 100 then it seemed ok except WOT. The only thing I did to the secondary is repacked the rollers with grease. Does anyone know what could be happening? Any suggestions on spring and wrap? Thanks
 
Sounds like your secondary spring is toast. Check the rollers in your secondary also.
 
I though it could be the spring as well but I don't know if it would get that bad over the summer. Should I pick up a new silver or another pink one? 99 sx 700 stock exhaust.
Also the rollers turn smoothly.

Well tonight I cleaned both clutch sheaves with lacquer thinner and put my old belt back on. Everything seems to be good, clutches are staying cool and no more slipping. I may need to wash my new belt and try it again.
 
Soo...you never said u wre running an old belt & dirty clutches. If you want help please more disclosure otherwise were chasing our tails.
 
I was running a brand new belt but I decided to try my old one because I knew it worked last year. I cleaned the sheaves to ensure there was no belt dust etc. left on there because it was slipping pretty bad. Both of my clutches were taken apart and cleaned in the fall.
 
Well it seems I have not eliminated my belt slip problem :o| . However now I only have a problem on takeoff and low speeds, at riding speeds the belt seems fine. Is there any reason why it may be slipping only around engagement rpms?
 
Belt would slip from too steep a helix & not enuff secondary wrap.
 
Hmm, I'm just confused because I have not changed anything from last year except for putting on a new belt. This setup worked great last year. Any suggestions on what I should try? The rollers and weights on the primary are originals but don't look in too bad of shape. Also springs are originals as well I believe. Those parts may need replacing but I don't know why they would change over the summer.
 
Is the belt slipping or the chain skipping in the chainscase(too loose) or driveshaft drivers slipping on the track windows????
 
The chain is adjusted and the drivers are not slipping on the track. Just when starting off the rpms seem high like the clutch won't grab the belt and I can smell burning rubber. This only happens with the new belt though, the old one works fine which is strange. Is there something I can do to the new belt to make sure it's not glazed or dirty?
 
Try backing off secondary at least 10 degrees. I just noticed your running a pink spring in the secondary. thats just too much for a 2 stroke!!!

Engine was out for a complete rebuild, I have an alignment tool but it's not super accurate. I wondered if the center to center distance was the causing this. The problem is I don't have an accurate way to measure it. I measured it with a tape and from what I saw it was within spec. Also by belt deflection do you mean how much I can push the belt down in the center or the belt height off the top of the secondary?
 
Also I tried backing off the secondary 10 deg from 80 to 70 as Turk recommended and that seemed to help quite a bit. I'm just going to test it this weekend on a longer ride and see how that works. Thanks
 
if the clutching worked last year it should work this year.
scuff the sides of the new belt w/ a scotch brite pad. put some paint thinner on a clean rag & lightly wipe the belt down to remove grease. when you greased the rr rollers you may have gotten grease on the sheaves. reclean the sheaves w/ acetone or thinner. the belt should be snug & not a lot of deflection.
check the #'s on the belt. yamaha came out w/ a new 8DN belt. the new one is 8dn01 & the old one is 8dn00. the new one is 1.5 mm wider & is a different compound. they are shipping the new belts & the old ones are not available.

After I greased the rollers I did notice some grease spraying on the clutch guard so I'm sure some of it went on the primary sheaves to cause the initial slippage. I have cleaned them a few times after that and also scuffed and cleaned the belt. As of now I have removed the grease from the rollers and just sprayed them with WD-40 to eliminate that problem.
That's interesting info on the new belts because it's only the new belt that slips, the old one grips just fine. I will have to check the numbers and see if it is different. Thanks
 
Well after a nice 330 km ride on saturday the clutches were working great. There was no slip on engagement and no slip at WOT. I'm going to need new weights and rollers for next year though, they are getting a tad worn. I'm looking for a new clutch setup though, on the lake I could only get it to 150 km/h, something not quit right. I will have to find out what helix I'm running, any way to tell what angle it is? Thanks again.

you have a roller rooster....right? if so, the angle of the helix is engraved on the side that seats against the spring cover of the secondary. unbolt the helix and take a peak. you'll then know for sure the angle.
