Ok so Dooman333 is my buddy and we were out riding the other day on his new to him 600 sxr, long story short, his bleeder bolt came off and he was running around for quite sometime before someone noticed he was leaking antifreeze. Now we stopped him and put the bolt back on and his tank was still at the full level. about an hour late as we we loading up his sled was running on 2 cylinders it seemed. So we lifted the hood and his head was black. As we got home we pulled the head and the dome on the far right side (#3 piston I believe) was black as well. Did we seize the #3 cylinder? If so what can we do to get this back running again?

I figured a new cylinder, new piston, new rings, and a new head. Can someone point us in the right I direction??
 
Drain the remainder of the coolant pull the head and cylinders and take a look at the pistons.If the head is black the motor was overheated big time.I bought an sxr 600 that was overheated just like yours last year.The bearings on the piston pins were shot,rings were stuck and the head was warped.I rebuilt the top end,had the head milled flat and it ran great with no problems.
 
I'd check everything out in the whole motor, even the crank, my guess is that it got hot due to air getting into the antifreeze circulation and not bled out.

Post pics if you have them.
 
Here is a shot of the parts i had to buy....Think i spent about 700.00.My cylinders were ok,but i still had the lightly honed to clean them up for the rebuild.

Looks like #3 is the only normal cylinder.Looks like the other two got hot and burned off all the carbon.Id tear the whole top end down to check all the bearings,rings,crank out.
 
Ok so the #1 and #2 cyl's are the ones we should be looking at. When I take off the cylinders what exactly should I be looking for? I am probably going to tackle this tomorrow morning.
 
Look for stuck rings.Any blueing on rods,bearings.You will see blue on the crank in certain areas which is normal.Look at the cylinder walls for damage.Check the head with a straight edge for warpage.Even if everything checks out,you have it apart you mise well rering it and throw some new bearings in it.
 
Ok lets say I pull all the cylinders and check the crank and the lower half seems to be good, what would we have to do to the top half? I was figuring a new #1 cyl and piston with rings, and we just machine the head or would be have to get a different one?

Also the sled only has 2K miles so the would figure the rings would still be good, also when you say stuck rings, what do you mean by that? As in the rings dont move around the piston??
 
When you pull the cylinders off make sure you dont drop the cylinder locator bushings.Sometimes they stay in the case,sometimes they pull out with the cylinder.
 
Yea,if the bottom seems good.Rebuild the top end if needed.With the head,it all depends on how bad its warped.It can only be cut down so far(i forget the max).You'll have to pull the pistons to get a good look at the wrist pin bearings.Make sure all the rollers seem to move freely and that they havent been overheated.Rings,yes they should move free on the piston.Check the end gap on the rings to see if they are in spec.Its pretty easy,take your time.
 
also note that we did some water pump work before all of this... had a small leak and the seal around the impeller needed to be replaced. Any chance we messed something up. Could that be why the coolant bleeder unscrewed itself? Too much pressure? NEED HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

The bleeder did not unscrew it self, it must have been left loose.
 
Yea I second that, and like stated before, check it all out, crank and everything. And wow that head does not look good being black, totally doesn't fit the redhead name.
