When I apply the brake on the Viper the headlights dim and the tach goes to zero. I assume that the brake light line is grounding against the chassis someplace. Is thee a known trouble spot that I should look at?
Friend had one do the same thing turned out to be stator

I had the same problem.
Check your wire harness.....
but, sorry to say it is most likly the stator.

Yes- inspect the wiring harness that runs under the motor. You'll probably find a rub through. Also a very common problem on Vipers.

Went through the same thing. Tach resets when the brake is hit, and also when you switch between high/low beam. You'll need a fly-wheel puller when you change the stator.
i had he same problem, and i checked under the handle bar pad and i found that all the wires rubbed. I shrinked rapped all the wires and the problem never happened again. So they must have been rubbing together and shorting out th lights.

When I unhooked the rear tail light at the light itself the problem goes away. Could it still be the stator?

I had a rub through under my gas tank that caused my tach to reset and lights to go out when I hit the brake!

You are cutting off the power demand when you unplug your tail lights so yes it could still be the stator!

Stator
OK I ordered the stator. Guess it's a matter of removing the exhaust, recoil. flywheel and replacing the stator. ANY TRICKS? I assume that the timing marks should be put back exactly how I find them?

Woo hoo! add me to the list of failed viper stators! I've got 7 miles on mine since i picked it up this summer and she needs a stator. Cost at Yamaha dealer here is $235, they have 10 in stock and say they have replaced a ton. BTW this happened at about 47xx miles.
JerseyJoe, IIRC its fixed. I beleive the only way to adjust timing would be with a offset ignition key, so it shoulnt be an issue just replacing the stator. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That's a great price for a stator, a normal price is usually around 190-200.
